New signal to be installed
By Peggie Williams

Subdivision prohibited
By Carolyn Hoffman
____ An appeal by a resident of a Monaghan Township zoning hearing board decision will prohibit the recording of a major subdivision until the issue is resolved. Supervisors suspected that would be the case at last month’s meeting, but solicitor Dave Lenox confirmed it at the June 14 session.
____ Monaghan’s zoning hearing board previously granted a variance to The Orchards Preservation Group that would have allowed two home lots to have less road frontage than current regulations permit.
____ The appeal means the subdivision of the former Rinehart Orchard property along E. Mount Airy Road cannot proceed until the matter is resolved.

Complaints lodged against business
By Peggie Williams
____ Franklin Township supervisors found out that tension is still running high on the 400 block of Franklin Church Road as Tracy and Jeff Brough came before supervisors to complain about their neighbor Tom Keefer.
____ Last month supervisors ordered Keefer, who runs a commercial business in a residential area, to modify his sign to conform to zoning regulations. But neighbors say that sign is only the tip of the problem at the Keefer residence.
____ The business existed prior to zoning ordinances being put in place and is allowed to remain as long as it does not grow or change in anyway. Neighbors allege that the business has grown considerable in the last 2 years.

Reinventing America, one movie at a time
By John Zaharick
____
Carl Kurlander speaks to former Pittsburgh Steeler and Hall of Fame player Franco Harris and his son, Franco “Dok” Harris.
____ How do we reinvent ourselves? How do we pull our towns and cities out of recession to reinvigorate our lives and our country? Those are the questions posed by the film My Tale of Two Cities, opening this weekend in Harrisburg. It tells the story of screenwriter Carl Kurlander’s move from Los Angeles back to his hometown of Pittsburgh, the economic troubles facing the city and what hope there is for reinvigorating the area. Over the course of making the film, Kurlander came to see saving Pittsburgh as a metaphor for all of America.
____ “The movie is intended to get people to think about how are we going to reinvent ourselves,” Kurlander said.
____ Northern graduate Katie Blemler, an intern with Kurlander, has been promoting the film in the area. In a time when downtown Dillsburg has more for rent signs than businesses, the film carries a pertinent message.
