Another earthquake shakes up Dillsburg
By Stephanie Lytle

____ Another earthquake rocked the Dillsburg community at 8:25 a.m. on Thursday, June 3.
____ Much of the chatter around Dillsburg on Thursday concerned the latest tremor. Residents made phone calls to friends and family members inquiring if they too had felt the same vibrations. Some turned to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to post their comments about the quake and investigate the experiences of others.
____ Barbara Sheffer, Campground Road, felt the tremor while sitting at her computer. She described it as a “loud booming sound” that rattled her windowpanes.
____ “I clicked into Facebook and saw a friend of my 18-year-old who lives in Fairview Township mention something about ‘yeah for earth tremors’…I checked her time and the time was close enough to my happening."

Size of quake debated
By John Zaharick

____ The US Geological Survey reported last Thursday’s earthquake as measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale, but geologist Jeri Jones and Millersville University professor emeritus of geology Charles Scharnberger feel the event was larger than that.
____ “In our minds it was over a 3,” Jones said. If so, it would break the previous record of 2.9 on April 24, 2009.
____ The quake was originally reported as 3.1 on the USGS website, but was then downgraded to 2.9, or 100 times smaller, when data from the Lamont-Doherty Cooperative Seismographic Network was received.
____ Jones and Scharnberger feel the quake was over 3.0 due to the extent of reports they received on it and Scharnberger’s own calculations.
____ The Dillsburg area has been mostly calm since a town hall meeting in November during which the locations and potential causes of the quakes were discussed.

Warrington Township
Bridge replacement declared an emergency

By Carolyn Hoffman

____ Warrington Township supervisors declared the replacing of the Conley Road bridge an emergency at the June 2 session. The declaration was made after learning that the bridge’s current condition impedes travel by emergency vehicles and would require them to take alternate and longer routes to sites. The declaration also gives the township leeway in hiring practices to fix the bridge.
____ As a result, the township is expected to hire a contractor to work on the bridge, with his estimated cost of $20,000 and not to exceed $25,000 unless approved by the township if the scope of work is found to be different than expected. This change in plans will also allow the township road crew to spend more of its time working on other township projects this summer. Steel for the project is estimated to cost about $6,000 to 8,000.
