Relay for Life spread light in fight against cancer

Luminaries shine on the slogan of the Relay for Life during the sixth annual event held at Bostic Stadium Friday to Saturday, June 18 to 19.
____“Are we ready to become cancer’s worst enemy?” Emily Reed asked the members of the 31 teams that had gathered at Bostic Stadium for the kickoff of Dillsburg’s sixth annual Relay for Life this past weekend. “Eliminating cancer is not going to be easy. I promise you, with your help it will happen.”
____This year, participants raised a total of $111,635 with more money expected to be coming in. Teams were formed throughout the community in honor of cancer survivors, in support of the cause and also in memory of those who had lost in their battle with cancer.
____“Give cancer a permanent holiday,” was this year’s theme. Every hour, a different holiday was celebrated through various activities.

Mechanicsburg Jubilee Day 2010 food, fun and sun

____ “Have we ever had better weather for Jubilee Day than in 2010?” CBS 21 weatherman Steve Knight asked a crowd of the fair’s attendees during the opening ceremonies on Thursday afternoon, June 17.
____ Applause erupted from the multitude. Knight was right. The sun was shining, the humidity was down and there was a slight breeze going all day.
____ “Everything is going smoothly,” said Jeff Palm, executive director of the Mechanicsburg Chamber of Commerce, early Thursday afternoon thrilled by both the weather and the attendance.

Fire company honored

____ Franklintown Community Fire Company was honored last week as only the second fire company in York County to have 50 percent of their active members trained to the level of Firefighter I.
Fire Chief Mike Whitzel was amazed. “I knew there weren’t many, but I had no idea there was only one other.”
____ State Fire Commissioner Edward Mann came to Franklin Township to recognize the achievement. He explained that the certification program was all voluntary; there were no laws that required a firefighter to receive training in order to fight a fire.

Shooting range to be regulated

____ Warrington Township supervisors reported they are moving ahead with their plans to regulate activities at Central Penn Sporting Clays, but not fast enough to suit several neighbors who attended the June 16 session. Noise from the shooting range is the major complaint, causing residents to report they were “prisoners in our houses.”
____ Supervisors told the residents they needed to build a solid case before moving forward, noting that residents were told previously that the township would proceed after settling the situation at the Warrington Hunt Club, another shooting range.

Spa supply store to feature organic products

____ With the overwhelming focus on eating right, exercising and being healthy, one morning Barbara Smith stopped to think about her skin. Yost receives Friend of Education award

____ Yost, who is retiring this year with 33 years of service in public education, has built a distinguished career in the Northern District. Backel's Career sets the mark

Amy Backel placed seventh in the women’s javelin at the 2010 NCAA Track and Field Championships on June 12.
____ Amy Backel went on to capture her second All America honor when she placed seventh in the women’s javelin at the 2010 NCAA Track and Field Championships on June 12.
____ Backel, who was University of Oklahoma’s school record holder in the event, had already won the Big 12 Track and Field Championship this spring as she closed out her Sooner career.
____ In May 2010, Backel graduated from OU with special distinction, won a Big 12 title and qualified for the USA Track and Field Championships in the process with a 182-5 earned Academic All-Big 12 honors for a 4th year, earned ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic all-district honors for a third time, received the Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship from the Big 12 Conference and qualified for her third NCAA Championship as the third-ranked javelin thrower in the country.

Challenger team gives children opportunity to play baseball

The Dillsburg Challenger baseball division gives physically and mentally handicapped children the opportunity to enjoy the sport of baseball.
____Five years ago, Mike Junkins responded to a need he felt existed in the community. He started the Challenger baseball division in the Dillsburg area, giving physically and mentally handicapped children the opportunity to enjoy the sport of baseball.
____ The program started out with just eight children and has now grown to a mixture of 35 boys and girls ranging in age from 5 to 23.
____ The Dillsburg Diamondbacks practice once a week for 6 weeks. On Saturdays they play games against other local teams, little league through minor league, during which no outs are counted and the score wasn’t kept. They play for fun. Each inning every player gets a chance at bat.

____Dillsburg Youth Baseball finished their season on Saturday, June 12. Bob Ruth Ford, majors division, took home the trophy for its winning season with a record of 17-3. The next closest team followed with a record of 10-10.
____ The team had six players return from last season. Their record last season was 5-15. With the returning players having another year of baseball under their belts, many playing fall ball and the addition of five new players, the team stayed focused and took advantage of every opportunity given to them to keep their opponents from scoring.
