Fire destroys two-century old barn, kills livestock

Mary Lou Bytof

Firefighters Monday evening responded to a barn fire on the 400 block of Franklin Church Road, finding the two-century-old structure fully engulfed and unsalvageable. According to reports, several animals including chickens, two sheep and a goat perished in the blaze. No people were injured.

The glow of the fire was visible in the sky for several miles, according to the Franklin Township Emergency Management Agency. In addition to fighting the blaze on the 50’x100’ structure, the firefighters also had to extinguish a nearby brush fire and work around downed power lines near the barn, according to the agency report. Since there was no fire hydrant, the firefighters had to get water from a creek on the property.

The Northern York County Fire and Rescue were in command of the situation. Fire companies from the following municipalities assisted at the scene: York Springs, Dover Township, Dover Borough, Northeast Adams Fire and EMS, Wellsville, Monaghan, Monroe Township, Upper Allen Township, and Yellow Breeches EMS.

The barn is on the property of what was The Peter Wolford House Bed and Breakfast which until recently was owned by Loretta and Ted Pesano. They bought the property in the early 1990s and operated the business until several years ago when they moved out of state.

Special events venue appeals decision

Carolyn Hoffman

The developer of a planned special events venue on Andersontown Road has appealed the conditional use denial by Monaghan Township. Under the appeal process, Monaghan has until March 3 to file a response brief, which the township solicitor reported was in process and would be completed by the deadline. After that, the appeal will go to the court of common pleas for action.

On October 26, 2022, Monaghan denied the conditional use application for a special events project on Andersontown Road. Residents who attended the session were concerned about the noise that could come from music, safety issues such as the nature of Andersontown Road, the lack of road lighting, sewer issues, the possible loss of the rural character of the area, among others.

In other action at the February 13 township session, supervisors saw a detailed report about possible action plans for an update to Monaghan’s comprehensive plan. The next step will be to prioritize and finalize the high priority items and decide how to implement them. Supervisors plan to meet jointly with the planning commission to work through those details.

The engineer was asked to develop a cost analysis for a “turnkey” township building. Monaghan raised taxes for three years and set those extra funds aside for a building. Bids for a specially-designed building were rejected more than two years ago when the cost was deemed to be too high.
