Newly-opened Allenberry combines old charm with modern amenities

Many local residents have memories of the old Allenberry Resort which was owned and managed by the Heinze family for more than 70 years. Whether visitors sat down to a Sunday brunch, took in a weekend matinee in the playhouse, attended an outdoor wedding along the banks of the Yellow Breeches or enjoyed a drink with friends in the Player’s Club, it was a charming venue.
After changing owners last summer and undergoing a massive renovation early this year, the resort is now open for business and showing promise in becoming a popular destination for visitors from near and far. As the perennial theater and fly-fishing enthusiasts continue to enjoy the newly renovated resort, the new owners plan to attract a greater variety of customers to Allenberry.
“We really want to go a little bit over the top with bringing in speakers and music groups,” Dillsburg area resident and Mechanicsburg native Mike Kennedy said. Kennedy, CEO of a local railroad construction business, purchased the 57-acre resort along with Jim Hoffman, another local business owner, last August.
“We see this as an untapped market for the arts and entertainment. Customers can eat, drink, stay over, and relax in this beautiful setting.” Kennedy said.
“It was the Yellow Breeches that hooked us,” he exclaimed. When he purchased the resort a year ago, there were 22 buildings on the property. Now there are 20. The new owners tore down Beltzhoover Terrace, which was built in 1989, and a maintenance building because they obstructed the view of the scenic creek.
