NHS teacher faces child pornography charges
____ A Northern High School teacher was arrested and charged with possessing and distributing child pornography on Sept. 4.
____ Brandon Thomas Deck, 27, 189 Melbourne Lane, Mechanicsburg was apprehended by agents with the Office of Attorney General's Child Predator Section and the Upper Allen Township Police Department who executed a search warrant at his home.
____ Agents seized a computer and other electronic media, including thumb drives, hard drives and a tablet computer.
____ A preliminary review of the seized items by the Attorney General's Computer Forensics Unit resulted in the discovery of numerous files of suspected child pornography.
____ Deck was immediately placed on administrative leave by the Northern York County School District. School officials say there is no evidence to suggest that any misconduct occurred on district property or involved any district students.
____ According to the school’s website, Deck was in his fourth year of teaching at Northern and was teaching chemistry and honors chemistry this year. On his teacher’s page, Deck writes that he graduated from Cumberland Valley High School in 2006 and earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and secondary education from Juniata College in 2010. He writes that he was a student teacher at Altoona Area High School, where he taught honors chemistry and general chemistry, and that for two years he tutored students in various levels of chemistry in addition to being a substitute teacher.
____ Deck’s arrest was a direct result of law enforcement agents conducting an online investigation to identify those possessing and sharing child pornography using peer-to-peer file sharing networks, according to Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane.
____ Deck is charged with six counts of possession of child pornography and one count each of distribution of child pornography and criminal use of a communication facility.

Bears throttle Susquehannock
By Joe Guty

The Polar Bears scored on the ground and in the air, while displaying an aggressive defense to effectively shut down host Susquehannock HS.
____After the long trip to Glen Rock last Friday, Sept. 4, the Northern H.S. varsity football team had a shorter ride back to Dillsburg.
____A 38-14 opening season win can do that.
____The Polar Bears scored on the ground and in the air, while displaying an aggressive defense to effectively shut down host Susquehannock HS. Northern still has some work to do as they prepare for a road game against Middletown this upcoming Friday. However, it's an encouraging start to the new season as quarterbacks Curtis Robison and Justin Markle shared time at the offensive helm and Mike Kearney scored two rushing touchdowns. Andrew Swaisgood hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Markle and Bobby Shelly found the end zone from 10 yards out. Oh, and a new kicker was born. Jake Coover filled in admirably for injured star Aiden Alves. Coover booted a 31-yard field goal and was 4-for-4 on extra points. It's the stuff that wins ballgames.
____Much credit goes to the front line to help the Polar Bear push matters downhill.
____"In the offense we want to run it's a downhill attack and it really requires the guys up front to get off the ball and move people and I think we did that pretty well tonight," said first year Head Coach Greg Bowman. "We still have a lot of work to do of course, it's just one win, but we're thrilled and a great way to start the season. We'll now get back to work and start to focus on Middletown."

____ The Polar Bears then opened their divisional schedule on Tuesday and fell 3-1 to East Pennsboro.

Wolf Tracks
Crunching numbers on outdoor activities

Many backwoods cabins lack Wi-Fi service.
____ I was a bit surprised to see an article in the Endeavor newspaper that covered meetings on what is now an inoperative ski area. The number crunchers came up with an estimate, that only 3 percent of the population participates in snow skiing. I guess we will have to wait until the Winter Olympics return to bring back interest in the sport.
____ Studies have shown that there is a resurgence of the number of fly-fishers out there, even if the overall number of anglers may be dwindling slightly. Regardless, there are close to 30 million anglers nationwide according to a 2006 study by the Fish and Wildlife Service. Some would find that hard to believe after witnessing one of the opening days in Pennsylvania.
____ However, the Fish & Boat Commission is turning every which way but loose in trying to convince non-anglers to give fishing a try. I reported a few weeks ago, that the PFBC had opened some lakes for trout and panfish throughout the state for youth-mentored fishing. They also lowered the cost of a fishing license for the day as well. However, without an explanation, three of the lakes scheduled for trout stocking were postponed. Apparently, only Greenwood Lake, in Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntingdon County was stocked. When trying to win friends and influence people, it would seem that giving notice would have been appropriate. I did find a “tweet” on the Commission’s website, although it was only one line, that warm water was the reason. But anyone could have forewarned the PFBC that the water was too warm for trout stocking.
____ Although I support the Commission, its executive director and many of their programs, the term “build it and they will come” should hold some credence. When people come into areas without Wi-Fi service, to partake of something promised, excuses run thin. At this point, I’m happy I didn’t show up to cover one of those lakes. The days didn’t fare as well as some expected, but it might have been worth a try.
