Anglers await the 8 a.m. opening day start on Saturday at Childrens Lake, Boiling Springs.
____ There are no rain delays in trout fishing. Come rain or shine, the first of two opening days offered rain, but the day went on as scheduled.
____ This year’s opening offered a tradition with a twist—two opening days rather than one.
____ The concept was that two opening days would allow anglers to catch trout in the designated 18 southeastern counties two weeks earlier, where waters usually warm faster than they do in other sectors of the state. The season here began on March 29, but nature has thrown us a curve. This year, temperatures averaged colder than normal, and no one was certain what to expect.
____ The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) reported, “On the eve of the March 29th regional opening day of trout season, the number of licensed anglers is up by approximately 7.5 percent.”
____ Anglers began showing up as early as Thursday evening to pitch tents and pull in campers. Some we talked to had been coming to the same area for 30 years. Fishermen and women came from throughout the state and out of state as well.

Dillsburg lawyer David Lenox in his new office on Tristan Drive.
____ For adults who have the idea that everything you say to the younger generation “goes in one ear and out the other,” you might want to think again when you hear the story of Dillsburg lawyer David Lenox. Lenox tells the tale of an influential uncle who singled out each of his nephews and made several statements about the careers they would pursue.
____ “Uncle Leo was a successful accountant with six brothers and sisters who had a lot of children. He went down through his male nephews and said, ‘you’ll be a doctor, you’ll be an optometrist, you’ll be a lawyer’ and I believe that originally set my thinking about what I would be,” said Lenox.
____ But was Uncle Leo right? Did his nephews obediently follow the path he directed? Turns out so many of them did, according to Lenox, it makes one question whether Uncle Leo was prescient, or just a strong believer in the power of suggestion. More than likely the real answer is that the boys admired him and his success and therefore gave great credence to his bold declarations. No matter what the speculation, there appears to be no doubt that the man had a strong influence on his family members.

____A Dillsburg man was killed Sunday night in a crash on Route 15 north in Lower Allen Township.
____Garrett Levi Anderson, 20, of Dillsburg was ejected from his vehicle after striking a bridge abutment under the Rossmoyne Road overpass at 10:30 p.m., Cumberland County Coroner Charley Hall said. Anderson died of multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene; he was not wearing a seatbelt, Hall said.
____A similar accident at the same spot took the life of a Dillsburg teen last year in January.
____“Same bridge, different pillar,” Hall said. The 2013 accident victim, Andrew Peterson, 17, was also ejected from his vehicle, after striking a pillar and died of multiple traumatic injuries, the coroner said.
____Hall did not recall weather conditions of that accident but did note it was foggy and and the roads were icey this past Sunday.
Lower Allen Township Police are investigating the crash.

In back, Mike Baish and Jane Alexander read the Dillsburg Banner with actors of “Days of 98 wih Soapy Smith” in Skagway, Alaska.
____ Dillsburg lawyer Jane Alexander will be the first to tell you it’s a small world and she should know. She learned it firsthand when she decided to take a friend’s advice and visit the remote town of Skagway, Alaska.
____ She laughs when she tells one particular story, which seems to drive home the old cliché. “It all started about 15 years ago when I was working with a client from Boiling Springs, helping him get a divorce. When he came in to pick up his decree, I asked him what his plans were. He said, ‘I’m getting out of here and never coming back.’ I didn’t think much more about it, until my friend Mike Baish invited me to visit Alaska,” she said.
____ After a few years and a few more invitations, Alexander decided to take the journey up north. “I flew to Juno and spent a few days there, then took the ferry up to Skagway. One day I’m walking down the street and I hear, ‘Jane, what are YOU doing up here?” It turns out that the gentleman who spotted her was the client from Boiling Springs. He had relocated to Alaska and was working there.

____ It's easy to keep track of our Northern athletes while they are still in school, but when they leave to play at the college level, that's when most of us start to lose track.
____ Starting this month, the Banner will be keeping tabs on former Polar Bear athletes playing at the collegiate and professional levels.
Right now, the focus is on spring sports.
____ Below is a list that includes former Northern athletes playing baseball, softball, track and field and lacrosse. If there's anybody we missed, please email Andy Sandrik (big_andy76@yahoo.com).

___ Honoring student athletes for a record breaking season, the Northern H.S. Swimming and Diving Awards banquet was held at Liberty Forge last Saturday, March 29. Truly, 2013-14 was the most successful campaign overall in the history of the swimming and diving program.
The Girls team achieved their undefeated goal by doing just that: 12-0 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the Mid Penn Colonial Division. The Lady Polar Bears also won the team championship at the Central York Panther Classic, the high team score at the Muhlenberg Mayhem Meet and earned fifth place overall and seven medal winning performances at the Mid Penn Championships.
The Northern Girls squad won the District III, Class AA title and then placed fourth in the PIAA State Championships. In both championship meets, Northern established program bests in most qualifiers, medalists and points. Becca Luft was also crowned state champion. Along the way in 2013-14, eight new school records and three new pool records were established.
