Taylor Sheibley and Mikayla Sandner take photos of themselves during Northern High School’s graduation ceremonies on June 6.
____“Class of 2013, we are the class that adds up,” said Kimberlee Bartol, Northern High School’s senior class president, at the conclusion of her welcome message at the high school’s 62nd commencement ceremony on June 6.
____The popular slogan for this year’s graduating seniors, “The Class of 2013 is the Only Class that Adds Up,” has been seen on T-shirts and other apparel across the country. It is not only a reflection of a simple math lesson learned in kindergarten, that 2+0+1=3, but also the fact that graduates, sitting in their caps and gowns waiting to get their diploma, could only be there at that moment because of addition: added experiences, added lessons, and added knowledge that they had accumulated throughout their lives. And after graduation, they will take all of this information and be able to make a difference both in themselves and in society.
____“You have been trained to innovate, create and solve,” Northern’s principal, Matthew La Buda, told the class. “You have the requisite knowledge in academics, but it is important to apply it to problems that don’t yet have a solution….You can give society advances that it hasn’t seen.”

____ A group of friends and I have started our own support group called “Pain In The Neck” for our thyroid cancer. There is a lot of thyroid cancer being diagnosed recently, and every course of treatment has been different according to the people we've talked to. There's not really one way or one procedure to treat thyroid cancer. With breast cancer, a mastectomy may result and you go through chemo and you're better. My walk through thyroid cancer is part of who I am now, and it's given me a different perception as a nurse. I've been the patient on bed rest, away from my family in solitary confinement for three days. I've been the patient on the operating table. I've been the patient who needs pain medicine, and it's actually given me a new perspective. I can honestly tell moms who are on long-term bed rest. I know how you feel to be away from your kids. I had to do it for three days, and you have to do it for three weeks.”
____ Erin Marie Hartman, the daughter of Bruce and Brenda Hartman, was born on July 17, 1984 in Harrisburg Hospital. As far as early memories go, Erin swears she remembers her baby sister Lori coming home from the hospital although she was only three years old. Growing up, her sister, Lorraine, and Erin played outside all the time. They loved making up imaginary fairy tales which, of course, included beautiful kingdoms, lovely princesses and handsome Prince Charmings. “My sister and I had fun traipsing around the yard. It was our magical kingdom,” remembered a bright-eyed Erin.
____ “I started dancing at age 3, and I did that until I graduated high school,” said Erin. “I learned ballet, jazz, and tap. I wanted to be a Rockette when I grew up.” She was a very active child. Dance demands a huge amount of time and commitment, but she was able to participate in Girl Scouts, too. When asked who was the disciplinarian, mom or dad? Erin answered, “My mom, I guess, but if we didn't listen, she always brought in the ‘big guns’. I remember running away from my dad. From their bedroom all the way back the hall to mine, it was a straight shot. I slammed the door and set right in front of it, and then I’d hear the thud of his footsteps coming after me.”
