Dillsburg Citizens' Hose Company No. 1, Franklintown, Monaghan, Upper Allen fire companies; Dillsburg and Franklintown fire police and Carroll Township Police arrived to Jennifer Lane on Thursday, Jan. 17, to investigate a chimney fire.
____ When temperatures fall below freezing, more homeowners try to save money on their heating bills, often resorting to burning wood or coal in normally dormant fireplaces and wood stoves.
____ The result: an increase in chimney fires. The Chimney Safety Institute of America, CSIA, reports that, on average, there are about 27,000 chimney fires reported each year in the U.S. Between 10 and 20 people die in chimney-related fires annually.
____ The Franklintown Community Fire Company Chief Michael Whitzel said the freezing temperatures, combined with the economy, cause people to use cheaper, alternative fuel sources such as wood and coal to get through the cold snap. Often, these materials are burned in seldom-used fireplaces or wood-burning stoves.
A wood shed caught fire near a house in Washington Township on Franklin Church Road at about 1:17 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22. Franklintown Fire Company, Dillsburg Citizens' Hose Company No. 1 and York Springs Fire Company responded, along with Dillsburg Ambulance and Dillsburg and Franklintown Fire Police.
