Engine plows into truck hauling concrete bridge span

Concrete and rebar from a 135-foot bridge span wraps around the train’s engine after it collided at 1:40 p.m. on Sept. 12 with a tractor-trailer on Rt. 74 at Brandtsville.
____A freight-train collided with a tractor-trailer at the Brandtsville intersection on Route 74 at Creek Road Thursday afternoon, Sept. 12, derailing eight train cars and three engines closing down the roadway until the next morning.
____Dave Pidgeon, manager of public relations for Norfolk Southern said the accident occurred at 1:40 p.m. and involved three locomotives and four cars carrying 18 containers. There were three locomotives and 20 flat containers in all.
____The train was headed from Harrisburg to Atlanta, Georgia. There were two crew members; one was injured and treated at the scene.
____Pidgeon said the derailment occurred after the train impacted the tractor-trailer. The trailer was hauling a 135-foot concrete bridge span.
____Pidgeon said that section of the corridor is rated for 50 m.p.h. He said that crossing has flashing lights and gates which were deployed at the time of the accident and the engineer did blow the whistle.

Jon Altland of Dillsburg Citizen’s Hose Co. #1 hoses down the garage where the fire started on Siddonsburg Road Wednesday morning. Billowing smoke from the structure could be seen for miles.
____A two-alarm fire in Monaghan Township destroyed the home of the former Northern High School band director Wednesday morning.
____A car inside the garage caught on fire spreading flames to the attached home, Les Darr, First Assistant Chief, Monaghan Township Fire Company said.
____The garage was fully engulfed and smoke was pumping up through the attic when his unit, Engine 67, arrived at the scene, 542 W. Siddonsburg Road, the home of Doug Riley, Darr said. The call came in at 8:09 a.m.
____Darr said Lynn Maclay went to the garage, started up her Mazda RX7 and then went back inside the house. After hearing a “popping” sound she re-entered the garage and saw that her car was on fire. Darr said she tried to extinguish the flames but was unable to put out the fire, which spread to the house.
____Patrolman David McCoy, Carroll Township police, said part of the car was involved and the fire started to catch onto other things inside the garage when he and Patrolman Ron Stiles arrived. McCoy who is also an assistant fire chief for Franklintown Community Fire Company, said they closed the interior doors and attempted to knock down the fire before apparatus arrived by using two fire extinguishers, his and officer Stiles'. "But once the fire self-vented it spread quickly," McCoy said.

Franklintown Founders Day offers commemorative postmark
____Saturday, September 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., is Franklintown Borough’s Founders Day celebration at Franklintown Community Fire Company. Activities include historical exhibits, raffle drawings each hour from noon to 4:00 p.m., Girl Scouts representatives will register new members, and the Franklintown Postmistress will provide a postmark especially designed for the event, beginning at noon. Envelopes are provided free, stamps are 46 cents. The commemorative postmark will be available for 30 days at Franklintown Post Office.
____The Harmony Sisters and Company will entertain guests from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with their blend of country and blue grass music, promising a special treat of several Civil War era songs. Franklintown Community Fire Company will host a menu of soup and sandwiches throughout the event for sit-down dining or take-out. Souvenir t-shirts will be available to benefit Archie Hess Memorial Park.

Students team up to raise money for Miranda’s Smile

____ On Saturday, September 7, the Northern High School gymnasium had the sound of basketballs hitting the floor. Fourteen teams playing 3 X 3 were there to raise money for the Miranda's Smile.
____ Northern Basketball seniors Zachary Martick and Justin Jaquette co-chaired the charitable project.
____ "We had about fifty-six players participate in the 3 X 3 basketball tournament. There were fourteen teams. We raised over $715.00 plus what we get from the baked goods sale," said Martick.
____ "This was the first 3 X 3 basketball tournament held to raise money for the Miranda's Smile Foundation and we want to make this an annual event," continued Martick. Tammi Zeigler, Miranda's mother, handed out the trophies to the winners at the end of the tournament.
____ The proceeds will go to help teens fighting cancer at the Penn State Hershey Child Hospital. Miranda's life was cut short on January 30, 2009, after battling T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

____After a tough, close loss to Mechanicsburg H.S. last week, Northern begins their conference schedule this Friday at Bostic Field when they host Big Spring (2-1). The Wildcats (3-0) were held scoreless in the first half but came back to defeat the Polar Bears 24-21. While Northern fell to 1-2 on the young season, they went after Mechanicsburg early defensively.
____A scoreless first quarter featured key plays by seniors Richard Settle, Matt Bellan and Austin Egolf. Junior Hayden Miller had a quarterback sack for a seven-yard loss and sophomore Bobby Shelly also had a sack for an eight-yard loss. Miller also made a fumble recovery at the five-yard line early in the second quarter.
____At 9:45 of the second quarter, on a simple fly route, Settle hauled in quarterback Luke Lyon's pass for an 82-yard touchdown. With place holder Justin Markle spotting the ball, Aidan Alves hit the extra point for a 7-0 lead in a contest where the 'Cats were favored. Lyons, a senior who missed the first two games recovering from a knee injury, was making his first varsity start.
____Lyons gave credit to his front line as he finished with 241 yards in the air.
____"They protected up front and gave me time to pass," said Lyons. "We also knew from watching Mechanicsburg on film that we could hit the short pass play."
____It was not enough for the host team, however, as they struggled with only 34 yards on the ground.

____On Saturday, September 28, the Northern HS Music Boosters will host an entertaining evening of music and marching band competition at the Northern High School’s Bostic Stadium. Known as the “Northern Lights” competition, the program is an annual event which features bands from across Pennsylvania as well as neighboring states. This year, the show will also feature the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Marching Band. This 170 member performing group, currently in its 92nd season, is internationally recognized as a top collegiate marching band, and is known throughout this country and abroad as “The Legend”. The band’s performance will feature music from James Bond.
____In addition to “The Legend”, there will be performances from several local school bands, including Halifax Area High School, Cedar Cliff High School, Susquehanna Township High School, and Red Land High School. The Northern High School Marching Band will compete under the direction of Mr. Jeremy Leidhecker, and the evening will kick off with a performance of the Star Spangled Banner by the 7th and 8th grade band, under the direction of Mr. Chad McCartney.
____This is a judged event, and awards will be given in several categories, including the “Mr. Flyer High Music Award”, the “Mr. Zeiders High Visual Award”, and the “Mr. Riley Best Overall Effect Award”.
