Fourth of July fireworks
Greg March/Dillsburg Banner
Fireworks light up the night sky on the Susquehanna River near City Island to celebrate Independence Day on July 4. People lined the river banks, the bridges, Riverfront Park, and sat in boats to get a view of the explosive and colorful display. The show, which began at 9 p.m., was cut short at 9:30 p.m. due to “safety concerns,” according to Harrisburg police. Mayor Wanda Williams said that three separate incidents involving weapons were thwarted by police. A juvenile with a 24-round magazine was taken into custody; an adult male, running with a juvenile, threw his gun into the river, both were arrested and a boy with a BB gun was stopped and released, she said.

Chickens on the loose, snakes on the prowl
Carolyn Hoffman/Staff Reporter
Trying to decide what to do about loose chickens in Wellsville took up the majority of the July 1 borough council meeting.
The free-roaming fowl were reported to be marauding through neighboring flower beds and digging through newly-placed mulch, among other rude crimes. Council is likely to pass an ordinance requiring the miscreants to remain on their owners' properties or risk the full force of the law.
Apparently, many people in the town now have small flocks of hens as a way to combat high egg prices. Council doesn't mind that. What has become an issue is when the chickens trespass beyond their own boundary lines and stray onto neigh- boring properties. The new ordinance will require owners to keep their chickens in their own yards and make the owners responsible for property damage on other properties.

Fire company looks to replace truck
Mary Lou Bytof/Staff Reporter
The Northern York County Fire and Rescue Company that services Dillsburg, Franklintown and surrounding townships is considering purchasing a fire engine to replace an aging vehicle that has frequently been out of service, Assistant Fire Chief Carla Snyder told the council Tuesday evening.
The company's truck did not respond to the fire call at Tractor Supply in Carroll Township Monday evening because it was out of service, Snyder said. After some council members inquired about the incident, Snyder said that although the call came in as a structure fire, firefighters later reported a smoking, overheated air-conditioning unit.
“We are looking at ways to replace the truck. It is quite old and it needs repairs,” she said. The cost of a new truck, she added, is approximately $2.3 million.

With 12 wins to his name this season, Macri leads Dietrich (10), David Gravel (9), and Tyler Courtney (9) as the winningest driver in the nation.
