Wind storm sweeps through area, damaging property

Two storms passed through the Dillsburg area Wednesday, June 26, in the early evening and again later into the night, causing downed trees and structure damage in some areas, especially toward the border of York and Adams counties.

The National Weather Service in State College said that although severe winds were reported in this area, most of them were downbursts and not tornadoes. However, they could be just as dangerous, NWS senior forecaster Barry Lambert said.

A downburst is a strong, outward gushing wind system that blows downward in straight lines in all directions from the area of impact at the surface level. It potentially can produce winds that exceed 165 mph and can last for more than 20 minutes. A downburst is a type of straight line wind that blows out from a downdraft in a thunderstorm.

In Franklin Township, Michael McEnany said he, his wife and his son were at home when they heard “a huge clap of thunder and saw lightning”. “The wind appeared to blow sideways,” he said. That's when he and his family grabbed a flashlight and went down into their basement.

Firefighters assess a garage fire last Saturday evening in Dover Township

Lightning strike sets garage on fire

A garage is a total loss after it was struck by lightning and caught fire Saturday evening, June 29, in the 6,000-block of Piney Hollow Road, Dover Township.

Crews arrived to a working fire to the rear of the residence, according to the Dover Township Fire Department. After arriving the company split into two crews, they said, one for fire attack and another for search. They determined no one was home at the residence and the fire was mostly contained to a detached two story garage, four feet away from the house. Crews used rural water to ensure a continuous water source and worked to put out the fire for two hours before it was contained.

Residents ask supervisors to act against developers

At the Carroll Township board of supervisors work session on July 1, numerous items were discussed in preparation for voting at the July 8 regular meeting. Supervisors Tim Kelly and Kelly Wall were absent; Dave Bush, Libby Loudenslager, and chairman Brent Sailhamer were present.

Windy Heights issues

Public comment lasted more than an hour, with complaints from residents ranging from speeding and reckless driving to noise pollution and poor quality construction.

Rebecca Tanz residing at the corner of West Siddonsburg and Chestnut Grove roads, raised the “dangerous situation” at her property caused by motorists speeding and losing control at the four-way stop. She said the most recent of five incidents resulting in a vehicle hitting a tree and landing “20 feet” from where she was standing in her driveway.” Tanz said she's filed police reports with each incident, and requested the township do something to make the road safer.
