Wellsville seeks drivers, firefighters

Carolyn Hoffman/Staff Reporter

Wellsville Fire Co. has started interviewing for part-time daytime drivers and firefighters who will respond to calls from Monday through Friday, Wellsville Borough Council learned at its April 1 meeting. The fire company is hoping to have a pool of 24 people who can cover the daylight hours during the week. The new drivers will work a maximum of three eight-hour shifts a week and will be paid $18/hour.

Many of the drivers are expected to be full-time firefighters elsewhere in the area, so a larger pool will be needed to work around their schedules while also covering Wellsville's service area. Wellsville's secretary will handle the new employees' payroll and administrative needs. As a result, the fire service won't expect a larger contribution from Wellsville Borough than their current workman's compensation payment.

Fire Chief Larry Anderson gave a more extensive report on the fire company's activities, noting that the same report will now be shared with all municipalities. He reported the tanker lights were updated to LED, and that a new rescue truck will take two years before it arrives. A seminar was given to eighth grade students about the volunteer fire service. He also reported that firefighters can now receive property tax relief and will be reporting on the number of volunteers as both emergency and non-emergency members. An upcoming event will be a craft show on April 6.

Tavern to hold Celtic Festival

Over 275 years ago, Scots-Irish settlers like the Dill family established homes, farms and businesses in areas west of the Susquehanna River as part of a new American dream. The community of Dillsburg grew from those humble beginnings when Northern York County was still the frontier.

On Friday, April 12, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, April 13, from 10 am to 6:30 p.m., that legacy will be celebrated at the Dills Celtic Festival, held at the Historic Dills Tavern. Sponsored by the Northern York County Historical And Preservation Society, the event promises two days of Celtic culture and fun for the entire family.

The Dills Celtic Festival will offer some of the best musical traditions of Scotland, Ireland and Wales with continuous musical entertainment, including favorites Fig for a Kiss, The Kilmaine Saints, Bern n' Bridge, Declan Houton, The Celtic Martins, Across the Pond, and the Sean Heely Celtic Band. For a full entertainment schedule, please go to dillscelticfest.com.
