Madison Saltsburg was a member of the Northern High School Girls Cross Country team.
A 2021 Northern High School graduate and student at the University of Vermont suffered fatal injuries in a skiing accident in New Hampshire.
Madison Saltsburg, 20, fell roughly 600 vertical feet down Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington and suffered fatal traumatic injuries during the fall Saturday afternoon March 9, according to the US Forest Service.
Saltsburg and her skiing companion were faced with hard, icy snow surfaces, open crevasse holes, and unforgiving conditions for a slip and fall, the agency said. The responding team from the U.S. Forest Service, Mount Washington Avalanche Center worked to evacuate Saltsburg off the mountain.
“The Northern High School community is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Madison,” said NHS Principal Steve Lehman. “She was a Distinguished Honor Roll student who always carried a smile on her face. Her smile was contagious. Along with her outstanding work in the classroom, Madison was a talented runner competing in both cross country and track and field at Northern. Though quiet and humble, she was a fierce competitor and a terrific teammate. She represented herself, her family, and her school community in the most positive ways. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Monaghan Township Road and bridge repairs discussed
Carolyn Hoffman/Staff Reporter
It's spring, so plans for road and bridge repairs dominated the March 11 Monaghan Township meeting.
Big Oak Road will get full-depth reclamation this year for two-thirds of the road's length from South Fileys to Fisher Run. Bids are expected to be approved at the April meeting of the board of supervisors. Work won't start until after school is out, and work is to be done by mid-October.
The Fisher Run culvert replacement project is planned for a May 8 bid opening, and after bids are awarded, it is expected to take eight to ten weeks to get the concrete. The road will likely be closed for three to four weeks, depending on weather. Monaghan has gotten a $265,000 grant for the work. The project is allowed to take 180 days, but the work will likely be completed in October.

NYCFR Fire Chief Hector Morales, right, presents Carroll Township Supervisor Brent Sailhamer an appreciation award for 2023.
At the Carroll Township Board of supervisors meeting on March 11, Northern York County Fire and Rescue chief Hector Morales presented the board with an appreciation award for their support over the past year.
Carroll Township Police chief Thomas Wargo introduced the newest police officer who will start on April 1. According to Wargo, Jared Sutch, 25, is a graduate of Northern High School, a former U.S. Marine, and more recently a member of the York City Police dept.
Wargo also reported receiving a thank-you letter from Newberry Township for assisting in what had been called in as an active shooter with hostages at their Wal-Mart. It turned out to be a “swat” incident. Wargo said it will take “a lot of search warrants” for authorities to try to figure out where the fake call originated, since swatting typically utilizes multiple IP addresses.
In other business. the township's financial planners explained how the Secure Act changes now permit in-service distribution at age 59, if the plan is amended. According to Alex Langan of Langan Financial Group, the only cost to the township is approximately $250 to amend their plan. He agreed to present a template to the township's solicitor Michael Pykosh for review, before supervisors decide if they want to make this change or not.

Cole Bartram places second in the 189-pound weight class against Daniel Boone's Tucker Hogan, losing 5 to 2.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
Call Cole Bartram crazy if you want, but Northern's senior 189-pounder had no plans of dodging anyone at the PIAA Class 3A Wrestling Championships, not even the one wrestler who has had his number on the mat: Tucker Hogan of Daniel Boone.
For the second straight year Hogan defeated Bartram in the state championship bout, this time edging his Northern rival by a 5-2 decision last weekend. While the loss will likely sting for some time, history will remember Bartram as the only grappler to even put up a fight against Hogan, who has gone 92-0 with 53 pins in his back-to-back championship seasons. Over that same period of time Bartram has gone 75-5, with four of those losses coming to Hogan.
Bartram, set to join the Lock Haven Bald Eagles next season, concludes his winter with a 36-2 record, which includes 23 falls. He ends his career for the Polar Bears as a three-time PIAA placewinner with a career record of 121-21, to go along with 70 falls.
Another Northern senior and Lock Haven recruit, Rocco Fratelli, bid his farewell with a 1-2 showing in the 139-pound bracket. Fratelli, a four- time PIAA qualifier, ends his career for the Polar Bears with a record of 97- 29, with 27 falls.

Northern holds off Lincoln Park

There were no style points awarded to Northern when they edged Lincoln Park Performing Arts H.S. last Saturday at home. The opening round of the PIAA Girls’ Class 5A State Basketball Championships was a rough and tumble skirmish with the Lady Polar Bears escaping with a 53-49 victory. As the Banner went to press, Northern -- the only victor and representative from District III to advance -- was slated to travel to Norwin H.S. in North Huntingdon on Wednesday (March 13) to face Cathedral Prep H.S. (20-3 and the top seed from District 10). Senior Cassidy Sadler led Northern with 16 points (four of which were from beyond the arc) and senior Siena Ondecko added 12 points as both players continue to play at a high level in the post season.
