State Life Lion lifts off with their patient on Rt. 15, just north of the tractor trailer accident Tuesday morning between the Golf Course and Glenwood road intersection shortly after 9 a.m.

Traffic on Rt. 15 came to a stand still Tuesday morning following a tractor trailer accident in the north-bound lanes between the Golf Course and Glenwood road intersection shortly after 9 a.m.

The driver of the rig ran off the shoulder for several feet before crashing into a raised berm, rolling back onto the highway, landing on its side, blocking both lanes of travel.

Carroll Township police said the driver, Yeury Lorenzo-Mercedes, 33, was entrapped but conscious and breathing when emergency crews arrived. He was airlifted by Life Lion to Penn State Holy Spirit Hospital. Quinn Mitchel, 36, a passenger, was taken by ambulance to the same hospital. The landing zone for the helicopter was on the north-bound lanes, just north of the accident scene.

Police said the original call came in as entrapment at 9:10 a.m. Three tow companies, CH Recovery, HJ Towing and Wagner Towing assisted in upright-ing the tractor trailer and removing it from the scene. South bound lanes of the highway opened at 11 a.m. The northbound lanes opened at 2 p.m.

Police said the accident is under investigation and suspect a medical condition as the cause.

Tow truck drivers position themselves to upright the tractor trailer and remove it from the roadway Tuesday on Rt. 15 North.

New board members get to work

MaryLou Bytof/Staff Reporter

Northern York County School District administrators welcomed four new members to its board of directors at the board's December 12 Committee Meeting and introduced them to the inner workings of the district. Eight members of the administrative team attended the meeting and introduced themselves to the board and offered brief summaries of their responsibilities.

During the meeting, the new board members got to work as they represented their respective committees. The newly elected board members and the committees they represent are John Gunning, buildings and grounds; Gerald Schwille, transportation; Paul Miller, policy; and Greg Weir, board operations. Returning board member Joe Rudy, who won re-election, continues his post as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee.

A week later, on December 19, the new board was ready for the monthly meeting. District Superintendent Steven Kirkpatrick reminded both new and returning board members about the function of a school board.
“The job of the board is governance,” he said. “It only has authority as a collective body.”

The board president is the spokesperson who will notify the media and the community, he continued. Zachary Kile is the new board president.

Fisher Run culvert delayed again

Carolyn Hoffman/Staff Reporter

Although a decision on a grant to replace the Monaghan's Fisher Run culvert was expected in mid-November, and also in September and July and going back for more than a year, no action came from the Pa. Dept. of Community Development (DCED) or the Community Financing Authority. Monaghan has all the needed permits and the documents ready to bid the project but can only wait for word about its grant application.

At the December 11 session, the engineer worried that the estimate for the project might no longer be accurate due to the extended delay. It's not just Monaghan that's impacted, all the other grant applicants are in the same boat. The state agencies plan to meet later in December, but there's no word if any grants will be approved then or not. For a while the state blamed the delay on a lack of a budget, but that excuse is no longer valid as the budget was signed in August.

The ideal time to get the project out for bids is at the beginning of a year, so bids should go out in January or February with a bid award in March or April for work to be done in a drier season, such as June-August. For now, the township can only wait.

Bartram defends King of the Mountain crown

Andy Sandrik/Dillsburg Banner

Cole Bartram sure seems like a man on a mission.

Northern's 189-pound stud and defending PIAA Class AAA runner-up ran his unbeaten record to 14-0 with a dominating performance at the formidable King of the Mountain Tournament at Central Mountain last weekend. Bartram overwhelmed the field in the 189-pound bracket with two wins and a technical fall before he captured the title with a 7-2 decision over Bald Eagle's Caleb Close in the championship bout.

It was the second- straight King of the Mountain crown for Bartram, who was Northern’s only place winner at tournament. The Polar Bears scored 65.5 points to finish 21st out of 32 teams.

Northern also ran its dual record to 4-2 (1-1 Keystone) with a 46-18 victory over Hershey on Thursday. The Polar Bears, who were scheduled to face Red Land on Wednesday, return to the mat on Jan.4 for a road match at Carlisle.
