Bentz identifies as a farmer and steward of the land

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture awarded Dale Bentz, his wife, Sondra, and their Old Mountain Road Farm with the distinction of a Century Farm to commemorate the dedication of the Bentz family for farming their land in Warrington Township for more than 100 consecutive years.
“I farm hay, wheat and soybeans, but I'm gradually turning the whole farm over to hay.”
Wellsville native Dale Bentz has been farming for over 50 years. He started out working the family farm with his dad.
“I graduated '72 and I was born and raised on my home farm which is just down the road here,” Bentz proudly shared. “When you're born and raised on a farm, it becomes your way of life. For me it was, anyhow. All you think about is farming and growing crops and as my dad used to say, “Make things grow, I just like to make things grow.””
The land that Bentz currently farms is a century farm. In order to qualify for the century farm program, the property has to be owned and farmed continuously by a member of the same family. In Bentz's case, his great grandfather began caring for the land, followed by his grandfather, his dad, his uncle, and now Bentz. A sign hangs onsite proclaiming this designation and will soon be accompanied by another sign denoting the farm's preserved status which he recently obtained.

Borough gets new stop signs
Carolyn Hoffman/Staff Reporter
Multi-way stop signs are now in place in Wellsville at the intersection of Route 74 and the Kralltown-Rossville Roads. PennDOT placed the signs on December 4. The signs will temporarily have flashing lights, one for 60 days and the other for 30 days.
Citizens have long complained about the number of near misses at the site. A faded, existing stop sign was also replaced. The action to place new signs came after Wellsville Borough Council requested a traffic study at the intersection. Because Route 74 is a state road, the borough has no authority to place the signs themselves.
Also at the Dec. 4 council meeting, the ongoing dispute between Wellsville's sewer authority and the treatment facility at Pinchot State Park could be resolved by the end of 2023. The sewer authority contends that several hookups to the facility remain, but the park's position is that the plant is already at capacity.

New this year are food trucks and a live band
MaryLou Bytof/Staff Reporter
As we conclude our shopping and setting presents under the tree these few weeks before Christmas, members of the Dillsburg Community Association are wrapping up plans for the annual Pickle Drop on December 31.
“DCA is working harder than ever to make this event better every year,” Dave Kelley, association president, said this week.
New this year are food trucks and a live band for revelers to enjoy as they await the grand finale of the celebration - the descent of Mr. Pickle.
After an unfortunate accident that befell the briny star of the show several years ago, Mr. Pickle is in top shape to make his dramatic descent into the pickle barrel to herald in the new year, Chad Reed, DCA treasurer said. Reed insists that the star is “a much stronger pickle” who is ready for his encore performance at midnight in the parking lot near Ace Hardware on South Baltimore Street. .
