New building plans moving forward

Carolyn Hoffman/Dillsburg Banner

Monaghan Township's grant applications for the Fisher Run culvert and for work on the Memphord Estates stormwater basins were delayed by the state once again. Now the applications are set to be acted on around November 20-21.

The timeframe to bid and do the work on Fisher Run is now stretched pretty tight, as everything from bog turtle breeding season to pipe construction to spring weather will impact when the work can be done. Supervisors decided to move ahead as much as they could by authorizing the bid documents be readied in hopes the word in November arrives on schedule and is positive.

The delay may actually help the township acquire funds for the Memphord Estates work, as additional state money was allocated to the PA Small Water grants program. The York County stormwater consortium is willing to pay for some of the infrastructure work needed in the basins, but first the trees and brush there must be removed, including the roots. That's where a grant from the PA Small Water program for the projected $35-40,000 cost would be used. The cost also includes grading the access roads to allow heavy equipment into the basins.

Work towards building a new township building is also moving forward. KPI, the engineering firm, was authorized to proceed with a more detailed site development plan after supervisors voiced favor for the latest alternate site layout. The new plan will also include a detailed budget analysis and begin the permitting process.

In one of the biggest upsets in recent Northern H.S. football history, the Polar Bears shocked East Pennsboro at Bostic Field last Friday night. Northern controlled the game early and held on for a 28-21 win over the previously unbeaten Panthers who fell to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Mid Penn Colonial Division. Northern improved to 2-5 on the year and 1-3 in the Colonial.

“It was a total team effort,” said head coach Bill Miller. “It’s a matter of having belief, and give credit to the boys as they answered the bell when they had to. We made enough plays to beat a very good football team. We played a physical brand of football and if we can keep that going, who knows?”

Against the Panthers, senior running back Cole Bartram eclipsed 3,000 rushing yards for his career in the first quarter. Bartram had scored Northern’s first touchdown from two yards out at 4:08 and then passed the career milestone after a 17-yard burst. That run and another nice gain of 15 yards set the Polar Bears at he five-yard line. With less than a minute in the first quarter, Bartram found the endzone again. Junior Anna Lehman added her second extra point on the night. Ty Witmer was the long snapper and Tim Gunning the place holder. Nolan Wimbrough, like Lehman, a soccer player who has found success on the football field, booted the ensuing kickoff into the endzone for a touchback.

Anna Lehman: A student-athlete for all seasons

Joe Guty/Dillsburg Banner

It doesn’t matter what sport or the season. Anna Lehman will be on the field, court or track, competing with a dedicated and competitive spirit that stands out as one of the finest in Northern High School athletic history. What began as more of a light-hearted joke than anything, Lehman’s wish to play football came true this season as an extra point kicker. And Northern’s first ever female football player.

“I’ve been telling people for a while that I was going to kick for the football team,” said Lehman, a junior and daughter of Steve and Mary Lehman. “I’ve always been competitive and really into sports, but it's been this ongoing joke. It was a thing my friends and I would talk about like ‘why not add one more sport?’ So, I thought about the idea a lot, but it never felt like something that would become a reality.”

This past spring, the football coaches reached out to the boys’ soccer team for a kicker to try to replace Mason Yohn who graduated after excelling as Northern’s finest kickers/ punters, and earning All-State honors his senior year. When members of the boys’ soccer team got the information seeking kickers for Friday Nights at Bostic Field, some of the players sent it to Lehman, a defensive standout on the Northern girls’ soccer team.

“Again, it was ‘imagine if you played football,’ thought Lehman who realized this could be her opportunity. “I just went for it because if I didn't, it might have bothered me to think about ‘the what if.’ After talking to my parents, I met with the coaches to express interest.”

Marine Corps Band to lead Fantastic Parade

Mary Lou Bytof/Dillsburg Banner

As the community prepares to celebrate the 108th annual Farmers Fair next week, committee members are hustling to put the finishing touches on plans to make this a memorable celebration. In addition to the traditional events planned for the week-long event, there will be some new activities and a few surprises.

Starting with the gem and grand finale of the fair - the Fantastic Parade - the Northern High School Band will relinquish its usual post at the head of the parade this year. On Saturday evening, October 21, the Quantico Marine Corps Band is scheduled to lead the parade.

According to Annie Cooke, first vice president of the Farmers Fair Association and parade chairman, after months of waiting, she finally received notice that the band had accepted her application to perform in the parade. VFW Post 6771 will host the 32-member band at their South Second Street location and provide them with food and drink before and after the parade, Cooke said.

The band from Quantico, Va., is one of 10 ceremonial Marine Corps bands that play in parades and other special events throughout the country. Four Northern High School alumni have played in various Marine bands. Chris Frazier played in the Bugle Corps stationed in Washington, DC., and Sean Stephenson, Colin Martin and Lauren Harbold all played in base bands.
