Funding for upcoming projects discussed

Carolyn Hoffman

Chris Caba, from the York County Planning Commission's Transportation section, spoke to Washington Township supervisors about the road funds that will be available over the next years. He asked supervisors for their input on roads and bridges that need repairs or safety improvements.

Caba told the three-member panel that the county will be working on 116 projects over the next four years, at a total cost of $192 million. Of that money, $48 million is for new projects; the rest of the money goes to projects that are allocated to multi-year projects already in progress, including several bridge projects that can take six years to complete. Some of the money can be allocated for safety improvements. A resident asked about improvements to Route 15 through Dillsburg and was told that to put a cloverleaf or interchange there to reduce congestion was estimated at $160 million. Blind intersections on Route 194 were also mentioned as needing safety improvements

In other activity at the June 19 meeting, supervisors learned they could restrict trucks over 45 feet to roads without an engineering survey. Supervisors made no decision at this session, but indicated they were considering that move on Bermudian Church and Big Mount roads. Chair Dan McGregor noted that there are “no businesses back on Bermudian Church Road, so trucks have no need to be there.” Solicitor Sharon Myers said supervisors would need to docu-ment why restricting truck traffic on those roads was needed in case it was ever challenged.
