Groups of musicians got together last weekend to raise funds for a local family who lost their home and its contents in a fire last month.

From noon until 10 p.m. on Saturday, seven bands took turns playing for customers at Hemauer Brewing Company in Mechanicsburg to support owner Brooks Hemauer and his family who lost their home in the January 9 blaze.

Local musician Kirk Wise along with Laura Zink-Martin organized the event at the business.

“We had a fabulous crowd from noon to 10 p.m., Martin said. At times, the tap room was so crowded that it was standing room only, she added. The event raised approximately $2,100 to help the owner and his family.

School district reports excess funds

As the Northern York County School District prepares to renovate two of its school buildings, the board of directors last week learned some positive financial news during its monthly meeting on January 24.

According to Jason Young, district chief financial and operations officer, the district is approximately $1.77 million over its budgeted revenue. While giving the treasurer’s report to the board, Young said that the earned income tax receipts were higher than anticipated, and the earnings on investments were up to $240,000. The district also received a Safety and Security Grant of $298,000, which the state awarded after the budget was prepared.

The district also received an Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief grant from the federal government, which was $100 thousand more than what was budgeted.

“This is a pretty significant windfall,” Young told the board.

“After all this time, we are still not being reimbursed for our Washington Township students,” School Board President Ken Sechrist reminded his colleagues.

It’s been two years since the Washington Township students left the Dover School District to attend Northern. Although Northern is receiving local funding from the township, it has yet to receive any additional state funding for the Washington Township students, Young explained. The judge has not ruled on what the subsidies changes will be for the Dover and Northern districts, he said.

On the subject of Washington Township, Sechrist opened the meeting by announcing the passing of Ralph MacGregor, who he said fought tirelessly to have the township students attend Northern schools. “When we thought that the Washington Township issue was dead, everyone did except for Ralph. I got to know him during that time, and he was a quality person,” Sechrist said.
