Driver attempts to cross highway, crashes into northbound car

A driver attempting to cross Rt. 15 from Golf Course Road collided with a northbound car Aug. 9 at 4:15 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Edward Tlusa, 63, of Dillsburg, driving a Chevy Trailblazer, was crossing the highway to Range End Road when he failed to see a Chevy Malibu, operated by Jalene Maldonado-Torres, 21, of Hanover traveling north. Both vehicles spun out of control, with the Malibu coming to a rest facing southbound on the median.

Carroll Township police cited Tlusa for entering a roadway without proper yield, fined him $25 and issued three points on his license.

Dennis Palmer, of Franklintown, said he was in the southbound, lefthand turning lane on his motorcycle, waiting for northbound traffic on Rt. 15 to clear, so he could turn onto Golf Course Road when he saw the driver of the Trailblazer pull out in front of the Malibu. “The vehicles hit and spun out of control,” Palmer said. Palmer, visably shaken, said he was grateful none of the cars hit him.

Officers commended for action, bravery

Officers James French and Elias Martinez were given a Certificate of Commendation by Carroll Township Police Chief Thomas Wargo for their actions on July 23. The officers spotted a murder suspect from an incident in Wellsville earlier that evening. They then worked with other agencies to set up a perimeter as they made the apprehension in a piece of woods in Carroll Township. The suspect was armed with a rifle that had a scope when he entered the woods.

“The murder of another human being is the most serious crime we have to investigate said Wargo. “What these officers did that night was absolutely tremendous. With the bravery they showed, I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The certificate in part reads, “Your actions reflect your dedication to the community and are in the highest traditions of the Carroll Township Police Department.”

2019 Season kicks off on the road for the Polar Bears

A new season has arrived for the Northern H.S. Football team. After a week of official PIAA practice that followed a few days of heat acclimatization practice, the Polar Bears host Wyomissing H.S. in a scrimmage this Saturday (11 a.m. kick off).

The first official regular season game of the year begins on Friday, August 23 as the Polar Bears travel to East Pennsboro H.S. Northern then is back on the road to face Middletown H.S. on August 30. In week three (Sept. 6), Northern finally returns home for a showdown with Mechanicsburg H.S. With the earlier start to the season, Northern will play five games, or half their regular season schedule, in the summer.

Several returning skill players highlight a bright spot for a team that lost only nine seniors from 2018. Northern hopes to improve upon its 6-4 regular season record (6-5 including D-III, 5 A first round loss to York H.S.) as it returns much skill and speed along with varsity tested upperclassmen. Leading the offensive line include returning starters Donovan Bair, Hunter Hertzog, Hunter Fitterling, Nick Fekete and Tim Geiser. Senior Kyle Swartz returns following a third straight 1,000-yard campaign at tailback. Also back is dual threat quarterback Jordan Heisey who split reps with senior Chris Barrett a year ago. With Barrett graduated and on to West Point, Heisey will take over with sophomore Layne Hose and junior Cole Lamb in the backup QB roles. Bair and Bay Blaschak return as defensive starters on the line. Numerous second and third level defenders are back and create another bright spot going into the season.
