Fire destroyed a garage in the 200 block of AlPat Drive, Carroll Township on Saturday evening, April 27.

A light switch inside the door was determined as the culprit of the blaze inside the 25 x 40 foot building, which contained mostly gym equipment, according to Northern York County Fire Rescue Chief Scott McClintock. Estimated loss is $75,000 to $100,000.

A relative of the homeowner first noticed the smoke, and the homeowner called in the fire. No one was injured in the blaze.

When units arrived at 5:30 p.m., flames were shooting out of the front corner of the building at the roof line with thick brown smoke billowing everywhere else.

Northern makes mark at Penns

Joe Guty

Once again, Northern made its mark at the Penn Relays. The 125th edition of the international track and field event held last week featured a three-day attendance total of 110,661. On Thursday, with 24,463 in attendance at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, athletes competed in individual and relay events. For Marlee Starliper, one goal in 2019 at “Penns” was to defend her title in the High School Girls Championship Mile.

One of 12 competitors, the junior had clocked 4:47.51 in winning the race last year. This time around, Starliper got boxed in at the start before settling in through the first lap in 72.4 seconds and a stride behind Victoria Starcher from Ripley, West Virginia with Greencastle’s Taryn Parks following closely.

At the halfway point, Starliper was timed at 2:23.8, again just off the shoulder of Starcher, before taking the lead on the third lap which was cruised in 69.2 seconds. With 300 meters left, in a flash, Starcher passed Starliper and never looked back on her way to a winning time (and new meet record) of 4:38.16. Starliper clocked a 69.2 second last lap to finish in 4:42.30 – an outdoor personal best time -- but she could not catch Starcher whose 64 second final lap around the oval secured the victory. While the roles were reversed -- Starcher had placed second last year in 4:51.15 -- it was a remarkable girls high school race as Starliper vaulted to the girls’ fifth fastest all-time mile at Penn’s and Parks (4:46.73), who finished in third place, moved to ninth all time.
