___ After half a century of service to Monaghan Township, Harold Coover has retired from the planning commission. His service was recognized with a plaque at the December 11 session, which outgoing Chair Chris Hoover called the most important piece of business the township conducted at this session.
___ Coover became a member of Monaghan’s planning commission at its outset, back when the commission was first organized. He often served as chair or vice-chair during his lengthy service and promises he won’t be disappearing entirely from township activities, only as a member of the planning board.
___ In addition to the plaque, supervisors passed a resolution recognizing Coover’s 50 years of service.
___ In other activity at the meeting, supervisors will prohibit the so-called mini-casinos in the township, after noting that they hadn’t received any feedback from residents either for or against the measure. Under the newly approved state legislation, all municipalities had to record their intentions about mini-casinos before the end of 2017.
___ Final approval was given to the 2018 budget, with no changes over the budget as presented at the November meeting. The new spending plan keeps taxes as the same rate, which now is 22 years without a tax increase, remaining at .9 mils. The 2018 budget includes a 3.5 percent salary increase for the township secretary and road foreman.
