On Friday, September 15, some special mothers got some special attention at Northern High School’s Bostic Field, which was a sea of red, white and blue at the football game against Mechanicsburg.
The student section was colorful and patriotic with many American Flags. The Northern football team entered the field running through a banner held by the cheerleaders carrying two American Flags held high. Right on cue, the Fort Indiantown Gap Marine Honor Guard marched down the track in front of the home team section and then to the field. On the 40-yard line was a garrison flag held by 16 people.
The reason for this display of patriotism was to honor and pay tribute to Gold Star Mothers, who have has lost a son or daughter in military service. The term "Gold Star" comes from the gold star that is hung in the window of the home to signify that a loved one was lost in combat. Each player on the Northern football team wore a gold star on his helmet for this game and was playing in honor of one of those sons and daughters.
