Five properties get go-ahead for commercial user

The Carroll Township Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance to amend the township zoning map to allow commercial activity on five properties located along U.S. Route 15 between Chalet Avenue and Golf Course Road.

One of those pieces is the location of the Sunoco fueling station and convenience store. The other adjoining pieces are where the business owners hope to expand.

During the hearing held prior to the decision, attorney Bradley Leber, representing Heavenly Places, LP, the owner of three of the properties including the one that holds the Sunoco, told supervisors it was not really a radical change from the current mixed-use designation, but that commercial would be “the highest and best use of the land.” He also argued that the land had been zoned commercial prior to the zoning changes in 2006 that now made the existing business a non-conforming use. Expansion would be impossible under mixed-use zoning and the properties should be returned to the designation prior to 2006, he said.

Power lines smoke and sparks fly after high winds and rain knocked over a tree on Red Rock Avenue, Warrington Township during Tuesday’s storm.     Earning two wins last week, Northern H.S. Girls tennis team is off to a strong start early this season. The Lady Polar Bears upended James Buchanan H.S and Red Lion last week while dropping one match to State College Area H.S. The Cedar Cliff match was postponed due to rain and was rescheduled for this week.

As the Banner went to press, in a short Labor Day week, they had Cedar Cliff slated for Wednesday, Sept. 6, and Central Dauphin H.S. for Thursday, Sept. 7. The Northern JV will host those same schools on those days.

Warriors stun Polar Bears

After two away games to start the 2017 season, Northern hosts Middletown H.S. this Friday night under the lights at Bostic Field.

The Polar Bears will try to regroup after Susquehannock defeated the Bears 31-14 on Sept. 1 in Glen Rock. Middletown is the 2016 PIAA Class AAA runner-up and handed Lower Dauphin a 24-7 defeat last week. Not the ideal opponent for the first home game. However, Northern took some learnings from the tough loss down in southern York County and should shore up some gaps with more game experience.
