Mural recalls simpler time in Kralltown

Community holds dedication ceremony

A mural honoring Kralltown’s sense of community was dedicated at a celebration program held on Aug. 27.

The program opened with artist Lisé Miller reading a poem about “Community Significance” and a moment of silent meditation. Miller, who painted the 1850s scene, introduced her assistant, Arlene Rohrer, who grew up on a nearby dairy farm. When Miller realized she would need a helper on the large mural, she asked around and found Rohrer. Rohrer wanted to take painting lessons so it was a perfect fit. They were compatible from the beginning and the project moved ahead, Miller said.

Northern aiming to reload, not rebuild

With 10 seniors from the Northern girls soccer team lost to graduation, the expectations for Seth Lehman's Polar Bears have plummeted across the Mid-Penn Conference and District 3. Everyone is expecting Northern to have a down year this year. Everyone, that is, except for Lehman and his Polar Bears.

"People are looking at us and saying how they're looking at us as rebuilding," Lehman said. "I really disagree with that. I think the girls will be playing with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. There's a low key about us. We're not saying we're doing this or going to do that.

Goalie Kayley Wallace dives for the ball, stopping a goal. The Northern Girls Soccer team scrimmaged Cedar Crest at Northern High School on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

After a season-opening win in week zero of the 2017 season, Northern gridders are back on the road this Friday to face Susquehannock H.S. The Polar Bears posted a 35-22 victory over host Octorara last week after piling up 396 total yards of offense. Junior quarterback Chris Barrett made an impressive first varsity start by throwing for 160 yards and rushing for 96. Barrett had good company as several teammates also made their marks in the non-league victory. Sophomore Kyle Swartz rambled for 115 rushing yards on 20 touches and junior Omar Hosni paced the receivers with 61 yards on four receptions. The visitors extended their 14-8 first quarter lead to 21-15 at the half. Two second half TD’s and a stout, touchdown-stifling defense in the last quarter sealed the Polar Bear win.
