Under construction for 12 years, the bridge on Locust Point Road (State Route 1007) over the Yellow Breeches Creek, Monroe Township, is now open. The crossing, southwest of Williams Grove, was closed in March of 2005 after inspectors deemed the single-lane structure, built in 1911, unsafe. The project was part of an overall contract that included replacing three bridges on Locust Point Road for $2,635,887. The other two bridges were replaced last year with box culverts.

Despite high heat, humidity and the threat of thunderstorms, organizers of the 76th Wellsville Carnival pronounced it a rousing success.
The long lines of diners primed for ham, roast beef, pulled pork, roast turkey dinners and country sausage with all the fixings moved quickly each evening, thanks to the many volunteers who prepared and served the food. The cleanup crew kept things organized with the help of Craig Harlacker, assistant chief of the fire company, who seemed to be everywhere at once.

Yes, while it is still summer, high school football has already arrived. Northern travels to Chester County to face Class AAAA Octorara H.S. in the season opener this Friday, August 25. The Polar Bears, also a AAAA school for football, should be matched well against the Braves. Head Coach Bill Miller and staff welcomed the squad officially last Monday at the beginning of PIAA pre-season practice. Heat acclimatization began August 7.
As the Banner went to press, Meet The Team Night was slated for Thursday, August 24. Northern will strive to improve on their 2016 record of 7-4 and 5-2 Mid Penn Colonial Division mark. The Polar Bears fell to Shippensburg in the first round of district playoffs after making it to the second round in 2015. While the loss of some key starters to graduation will have an impact, several players return with varsity experience and a talented group on both sides of the ball can make Northern a formidable force in the Mid Penn and beyond.
