Clouds hovered but there was no rain on Memorial Day to spoil the day for hundreds of community members who paid tribute to those who died for their country.

Carroll Township Police and the VFW Riders and American Legion Riders followed by an honor guard of local veterans Frederick Risley, Albert Roof, Doug Tutich and Stephen Long led the parade, which formed at the Dillsburg VFW Post 6771 on Hanover Street at 11 a.m.

Post Commander Brendan Middaugh and Former Post Chaplain John Kelly placed a wreath and raised the American flag at the Dillsburg Community Hall veterans’ memorial on South Baltimore Street.

A glance into the windows of the former library on Baltimore Street in Dillsburg is all it takes to know there’s a lot more to Katapult than just an engineering company that specializes in software for utilities and communications.

“You may have heard the rumor that we are in the business of launching people to mars via catapults, but this is only partially true,” joked Isaac Tucker, marketing director for Katapult, a Dillsburg staple since the 1990s, originally established under the name Stine Consulting.

In a race featuring jostling and elbows that one would see in an indoor meet, the PIAA Class AAA State Track and Field Championship Girls 1600-Meter Run had plenty of drama. When it was over, Marlee Starliper had earned her first outdoor state medal and a personal record time of 4:49.68. The Northern H.S. freshman and soon-to-be rising sophomore placed third in the 12-runner final. Starliper had won her preliminary race in Heat 2 on Friday as she cruised in first with a 5:03.94. In the first prelim, Abington Height's H.S. junior Katie Dammer crossed the line in 4:58.90. Greencastle freshman Taryn Parks was third in 4:59.31.

The stage was now set for Saturday's showdown. The overcast, drizzly skies and comfortable temperature provided ideal conditions for a fast, competitive race. Dammer took the lead immediately as Starliper and Parks followed with a pack of about eight runners on their heels. After a fast first lap around 67 seconds, the field strung out slightly. Passing the halfway mark at around 2:24, the runners were on pace for a fast time.

For most Dillsburg Area Soccer Club teams, the Memorial Day weekend was a chance to relax and take a break from the weekly routine of the Central Pennsylvania Youth Soccer League.

But a handful of teams, like the U9 Destroyers, U10 Avalanche and U14 Force, stayed busy by competing in various regional tournaments.

The teams represented DASC well. The Destroyers and Avalanche each won their tournaments, while the Force claimed a runner-up finish.

The Destroyers with their first-place trophy.
