Jill Murphy Long was a teenager at Central York High School, living less than 13 miles away from Three Mile Island in 1979 when the infamous partial nuclear meltdown occurred. In 2012, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Convinced that the two events are linked, Long has written a screenplay for a feature film called “Meltdown” that will tell the stories of many central Pennsylvania residents whose health and lives were compromised on that day nearly four decades ago.

The Northern baseball team found itself in a dogfight with visiting Northeastern in Saturday's season opener. But thanks to the bat of Louis Peiffer and the arms of Trent Culver and Scott Leitholf, the Polar Bears were able to get the job done in a 1-0 victory over the Bobcats.

Northeastern starter Chris Moyer didn't strike out a batter, but he had the Polar Bears in check through three innings. Northern finally broke through in the fourth, when Peiffer mashed a two-out single to drive in Leitholf for the game's only run.

With only eight varsity players, the 2017 Northern Boys Volleyball team will rely on teamwork and every player’s effort for each match. Despite the lack of depth, Head Coach Deb Rutter is both optimistic and realistic about the new season.

"We will have to be a team that plays really good defense and be smart hitters," said Rutter earlier this week as the team prepared for a road game on Tuesday against Palmyra. "The thing I say about this team is we may be small in numbers but we are mighty in effort."
