Frank Wirth, chairman of the Northern York County Emergency Services Steering Committee, spoke on behalf of the Franklintown Fire Company and the Citizens Hose Company of Dillsburg to announce their anticipated merger by August.

The solicitor for the pending merger, Jill Nagey, said the by-laws are nearing completion and sufficient funds are available to weather at least a three-month slowdown on funds. One audit of the relief funds is still pending but should not be an issue. The new organization will be named the Northern York County Fire, Rescue, and EMS, Inc., as has been reported. The two current fire companies have been working together and sharing apparatus and equipment for some time.

Mark Ryder is sworn in as a new council member by Judge Thomas during Tuesday’s Dillsburg Borough meeting, Feb. 14.

While just seven Northern H.S. athletes competed in last weekend' s Mid Penn Conference Swimming Championships, they proved that hard work does get positive results. Without tapering for the big post season meet, the Polar Bears recorded 14 times that were faster than their entry time in over 16 events. They also had 13 Career Best Times across 22 swims and posted five untapered Best Times. Competing against both AAA and AA schools, sophomore Kate Luft made a statement by establishing a new school record time of 2:10.83 in the Girls 200 IM. With a strong final surge over the last 50 meters freestyle leg, her mark broke the previous school record of 2:12.27 held by Jess Trgovic (2011).

The Northern Girls 400-Yard Relay team Rachel Eby, Alexa Byers, Katelyn Boyce and Kate Luft placed sixth with a time of 3:49.12 at the Mid Penn Conference Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School.

The road to the PIAA Wrestling Championships begins on Saturday for Northern, when the Polar Bears travel to Mechanicsburg to compete in the District 3-AAA Section III Tournament.

Josh Murray's squad will be represented in 10 different weight classes and the team will be led by three returning PIAA qualifiers: Jake Koser, Micah Hoffman and Paul Feite.

"We've been cleaning up technique and focusing on the transition from dual season to postseason," Murray said. "It's all about the individual now. There's no team races to worry about. You just need one point to advance."
