nutrition and health

Submitted by Gayle Yost

Farm to School Programs have been getting more and more attention these days. .

The Northern York County School District’s farm to school programming started in 2010 with goals to increase students’ understanding of agriculture, nutrition and health by buying fresh, locally- grown farm products served for meals and snacks in K-12 school environments while incorporating educational education and experiential learning.

Northern High School students Amber Fogelsanger, Skylar Wetherbee, Diana Willman and Mary Secord plant seeds for spring in Carol Richwine’s class.

Will Clark, from the York County Planning Commission, asked Carroll Township supervisors for reasons for their ‘no’ vote on the Rt. 15 policy and truck traffic on Golf Course Road at the recent supervisors’ work session meeting.

Bruce Trostle went first, stating “I did not support the MPO because of limiting access from east to west, because of business interests, would like to use more red lights, and business properties would become worthless if access was further limited.”

Andy Ritter did support it, stating that his reasons were “re-routing of Rt. 74 but other details were still missing.”

On Friday night, February 3, Northern H.S. Girls Basketball team seniors Maddie Waits, Stefanie Wolf and Catherine Brubaker were honored before the varsity game against Big Spring H.S. After a 9-9 first quarter, Northern held a 19-17 lead at halftime. Both teams played close in the second half before the Lady Polar Bears won 44-41. Corrina Smith had a stellar fourth quarter as she grabbed key rebounds and finished with a game high 19 points.

Allie French had a strong defensive game while Maddie Waits and Kyra Gerber converted steals to layups and points for the host team. Catherine Brubaker had a good night hitting a key 3-pointer and a fourth quarter layup off of an out of bounds play. Northern's dismal foul shooting did not put a damper on their aggressive play and of course a nice home win and positive send off for the seniors. Other scorers for the Lady Polar Bears included Kyra Gerber (9), Catherine Brubaker (8) and Maddie Waits (8). Madison Bishop led Big Spring with 10 points.

Northern's Maddie Waits drives to the basket for two points. On Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Northern Varsity Girls Basketball team came from behind to defeat James Buchanan 55 to 49 at Northern High School.
