More than 16,400 competitive exhibitors on 24 acres attract

Exhibitors and visitors from all corners of the Mid-Atlantic arrived in Pennsylvania’s capital city to experience the largest indoor agricultural event in the United States, the Pennsylvania Farm Show, in its 101st year. More than 16,400 competitive exhibits – including 3,134 competitive exhibitors and nearly 300 commercial exhibitors – were on display within the 24 acres spread throughout the complex’s 11 halls and three arenas.
The show kicked off with the traditional unveiling of a butter sculpture crafted by Jim Victor of Montgomery County. Weighing more than 1,000-pounds, this year’s sculpture was based on the theme of “The Culture of Stewardship.” It depicts the commitment of dairy farmers across the commonwealth to conserve and maintain the land, air and water on their farms and in their communities. This project was sponsored by the American Dairy Association of the North East and the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program.

Effect on emergency
services to be topic of future meeting
Washington Township’s supervisors told residents they plan to set up a meeting with the fire companies covering the township and interested residents to determine if the closing of the Creek Rd. and Rt. 194 intersection should alter which emergency services respond to the township.
The intersection will be closed in February to reconstruct the bridge on Rt. 194 and that construction is what will close the intersection, which is a main route used to and from East Berlin. The bridge rebuild is planned for 585 days. At the December meeting, residents voiced concern that the planned detour would add response time for both ambulance and fire companies. No date has yet been arranged for the meeting.
The rest of the monthly meeting was short, with only one item of business on the agenda: supervisors voted to exonerate the tax collector from unpaid taxes for 2016, a standard action.

In High School Swimming and Diving, Northern is scheduled to face Palmyra on the road this Thursday (Jan. 19) and then host Boiling Springs next Tuesday (Jan. 24). The Polar Bear teams also had long time rival Trinity-Camp Hill scheduled at home for this past Tuesday (Jan. 17).
Against James Buchanan H.S. last Thursday (Jan. 12), the Lady Polar Bears improved to 3-1 in the Mid Penn Colonial Division and 4-5 overall after a 115-65 win. The boys team posted a 112-55 win to move to 2-2 in the Colonial and 4-5 overall. Host Northern recorded 32 Career Best Times, three Career First Times, four Season Best Times/Scores and five In-Season Best Times.

The Northern wrestling team evened its record at 4-4 with a 46-24 win over Mechanicsburg on Thursday night.
Josh Murray's Polar Bears didn't get to wrestle on Saturday as their match with Red Land was postponed to Jan. 25 because of inclement weather.
Northern, which ranks No. 21 in the District 3-AAA power rankings, was scheduled to wrestle Big Spring on Wednesday and returns to the mat this evening with a road match at Lower Dauphin. After that, the Polar Bears will travel to compete in the New Oxford Tournament this weekend.
