After having their original date snowed out two weeks earlier, the Northern High School basketball teams held the seventh annual Miranda’s Smile Shoot-a-thon this past Saturday, setting a new record for funds raised.
Players from grades 7 through 12 were joined by the high school cheerleaders to raise $10,023 for the Miranda K. Zeigler Foundation, which benefits teens with cancer. The amount easily surpassed the previous high of $7,175 set in 2012.
The evening also featured several skill and shooting competitions that also involved teachers, coaches and parents.

Monaghan Township spent an estimated $14,225 for snow removal during January’s blizzard, township supervisors heard at their February meeting.
Estimating the cost is the first step in the reimbursement process from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. As of the February 8 session, it wasn’t known how much of the cost might be covered by FEMA.

Warrington Township supervisors got an update from solicitor Don Hoyt about some of the questions from the previous meeting regarding the legal and zoning status of Warrington Foot Beagles.
The solicitor indicated operation of the kennel is not an issue under the zoning ordinance as no profit is involved. He also indicated that affidavits about the barking would be needed before any action could be taken by the township. The township must first see the affidavits before deciding how to pursue the matter. Township options could include contacting the owner by letter and giving them time to fix the issue; doing nothing if they don’t consider the evidence to be strong or taking the case to the district justice. Residents also have the option of taking action at the district justice level.

__With a 108-72 victory over Shippensburg last Thursday, the Northern H.S. Girls Swimming and Diving team closed out the 2015-16 dual meet regular season in style. The Lady Polar Bears captured the Mid Penn Colonial Division title with a 6-0 record (10-1 overall) as they recorded 16 career best scores / times, an in-season best time and eight season best times.
"The outstanding accomplishments this season were achieved by a unique team of committed, hard-working young ladies who challenged, encouraged and supported each other over the past three months," said Head Coach Bill Resser.
Against Shippensburg, the Polar Bear Boys' team posted 22 career best times, an in-season best time and three career first swims.

Less than a month after clocking Big Spring 45-27 in a regular-season dual meet, Northern's wrestling team was eliminated from the District 3-AAA postseason with a 44-25 loss to the Bulldogs in the first round.
Josh Murray's Polar Bears, who outscored their dual opponents by a 503-277 margin, complete their season with a 9-2 record and a spotless 6-0 mark in the Mid-Penn Capital Division.
Things will only get more difficult next season as the Polar Bears will make the jump from the Capital to the Keystone. This year's Keystone champion was Cedar Cliff, which thumped the Polar Bears by a 51-25 score on Jan. 2.
Murray's boys, however, are focused on the present and preparing for the District 3-AAA Section 1 Tournament at Mechanicsburg, which will be held on Feb. 20.

Facing Mechanicsburg H.S. last Thursday, Feb. 4, the Northern H.S. Girls Varsity and JV Basketball teams closed out the 2015-16 season. The host Lady Polar Bears could not contain the Wildcats who rolled to a 40-14 win in the non-league contest. Corrina Smith led Northern with seven points and Maddie Waits added four. Catherine Brubaker contributed three points. Mechanicsburg was paced by Megan Schrass (16 points) and Jordan Hertz (8 points). Suzy Badorf added three points. Northern finished the year at 1-11 in the Mid Penn Colonial Division and 5-17 overall.
