Larry Gerhard, of Northumberland, takes a dive under water in his costume.
Under sunny skies and 43 degree weather, over 400 swimmers in four different heats took the plunge into Gifford Pinchot State Park Saturday, January 16 as part of the 11th Annual Capital Area Polar Plunge.
This year the event raised about 75,000 to benefit local Special Olympics PA programs.

Fast forward 11 years
Seniors Kaden Kieffer, Candace Gerber, Amy Kimmel, Mackenzie Bream, Brennan Maynard, Hunter Osterhoudt, Darrin Edwards and Warren Speck read news they wrote, in 2005, in first grade.
When January 1, 2016 rolled around this year, a group of Northern High School seniors thought immediately of something they had
been keeping since January 1, 2005 – their sealed, first-grade time capsules.
“I remember being super excited when I put this away,” said Brennan Maynard. “I couldn’t wait to open it.”
Seven other seniors who accepted teacher Michele Brymesser’s invitation to come back to Dillsburg Elementary and open their time capsules nodded in agreement.
“I really wanted to open it,” said Mackenzie Bream. “Mine was in a storage unit. My mom had to go look for it.”
The time capsules –decorated Pringles cans – contained things that were precious to the children back in 2005, like a Happy Meal toy and their favorite drawing of themselves. The capsule also contained letters from then District Superintendent Brian Small and Assistant Superintendent Linda Lemmon as well as their principal Dr. Pat Franko, still the principal at Dillsburg Elementary School.

Corrina Smith goes to the basket for two points in the third-quarter of play.
___Improvement in small steps is the mantra for the Northern H.S. Varsity Girls basketball team.
“We have worked so hard to not have turnovers against presses and to improve our defense,” said Head Coach Paula Clendaniel after last weekend's game against Milton Hershey H.S. "Both have happened and we had great success in both of those areas, but we are not putting the ball in the hoop enough to get enough points on the board to win."
Well, Northern found the basket in back-to-back home games this past Monday and Tuesday! And they made some defensive statements too. On Tuesday, Jan. 19, Maddie Waits made a foul shot with one second left on the clock to help secure a thrilling 41-40 victory over Mid Penn Colonial Division foe Waynesboro. Down by four points after three quarters, the Lady Polar Bears used a 9-4 final quarter run capped by the winning foul shot. Waits led Northern with 12 points and Kyra Gerber added 10. Other scorers for Northern included: Corrina Smith (7), Kaley Wallace (6), Catherine Brubaker (4) and Abby Reeder (2). Cat Weber led the visitors with 18 points.

Northern H.S. swimmers and divers (and their loyal fans) took the long trip to Leesport last Thursday to face Schuylkill Valley H.S. The journey and District 3 clash proved well worth it as both Northern teams earned victories. The Polar Bears' Boys team improved to 3-4 overall with a 91-84 win.
"A true team effort resulted in a very exciting, down-to-the-wire, 91-84 victory," said Head Coach Bill Resser. "That win was made possible by 21 career best times / scores and one in season best time. I can't overemphasize how much of a positive impact our new swimmers and diver are having on our achievements. Once again, filling the lanes with continuously improving swims/dives, really made a difference."
The Northern Girls team (now holding a 6-1 overall record) faced the Lady Panthers who are one of the top ranked District 3 - AA teams and returned home with a 97-89 victory. The Lady Polar Bears recorded 10 career best times/ scores and six season best times.
