A down-trodden Mr. Pickle lies on the blue tarp used by his virtuous rescuers.
This weekend’s unusual weather was hard on the area’s iconic mascot – Mr. Pickle. Not only did the record high
temperatures and warm rains bring the final demise of the Mr. Pickle ice sculpture left in the square from the New Year’s Eve celebration, but Saturday night’s high winds toppled over the carved wooden figure from which it was modeled. Calls began pouring into the Banner office on Monday morning, asking why there was nothing but a barrel standing on the corner of Harrisburg Pike and East Harrisburg Street. Mr. Pickle’s cracked and broken body was soon found under a blue tarp in Barb Virtue’s back yard.

Northern won the South Mountain Wrestling Classic on Wednesday, Jan. 6 with a 45-26 victory over rival Big Spring. The two schools have been wrestling since 1961. The traveling trophy is hoisted by the celebrating team last night. Big Spring leads the series with a 30-25 record.
____Following a quick 63-10 home victory over Palmyra on Thursday night, Northern's wrestlers and coaches hurried home to catch a televised match between Big Spring and defending PIAA Class AA team champion Boiling Springs.
The final score -- Big Spring 36, Boiling Springs 28 -- had Josh Murray's boys buzzing with excitement. Why? Because the Polar Bears had just knocked off the Bulldogs the night before by a 45-27 score to secure the South Mountain Classic trophy for the first time in Murray's tenure. We've known for a while that Northern, led by 37 combined wins from Jon Ross and Jake Koser, is a strong tournament team, but there have been a fair share of questions as to how the fresh-faced Polar Bears would shape up as a dual squad.
We got some answers with last week's showing.
"This is the first time I think we wrestled as a complete team. Everyone was doing their job and filling their role," Murray said. "It was pretty good for those kids to see the defending AA state champion get beat by a team we kind of blew out."
