Others agreed with him.
____ Sgt. David Smith of Carroll Township Police presented Stiles with a large collection of letters from some of the D.A.R.E. graduates. “Many of them consider you like a grandfather,” Smith told him.

Officials investigate the scene where a man drowned after his sculling boat capsized on Pinchot Lake Thursday morning, July 9.

____ A prolific boat racer known by those who trained with him as a skilled and powerful rower died Thursday after his boat, known as a scull, capsized on Pinchot Lake, officials said.
____ Kevin Breckenmaker, of Hershey, was a member of the Susquehanna Rowing Association, a nonprofit group that helps train amateur athletes at Gifford Pinchot State Park. The association's president Bruce Herring said Breckenmaker, 58, joined the group around 1990, about five years after it formed and moved from City Island in Harrisburg to Pinchot Lake in York County.
____ Herring said members were shocked about the death and couldn't immediately explain how the drowning could have happened.
"He was prolific," Herring said. "He rowed a lot and rowed hard. He didn't just paddle around."
____ Water rescuers found Breckenmaker's boat capsized with him still inside about 10:43 a.m., York County Coroner Pam Gay said. Rescue workers loaded him into an ambulance and rushed him to York Hospital, but he was pronounced dead there at 12:10 p.m.

Dillsburg to get Dunkin’ Donuts
By Mary Lou Bytof

____ Soon it will be “time to make the donuts” in Dillsburg.
____ The Dillsburg Borough Council Tuesday evening unanimously passed a preliminary final development plan for the construction of a drive-though Dunkin’ Donuts facility adjacent to the Wine and Spirits store on U. S. Route 15 North. The car wash site on the former Lefever Brothers property will be torn down to make room for the new establishment.
____ Upon addressing the council members, Leon Zeiders of the borough planning commission jokingly said, “You probably should raise the police budget.”
____ All kidding aside, the building should be completed by Thanksgiving, according to Paul Hedin of Lobar Associates, contractor for the project. The franchise for the facility is owned by Kings Point Venture, which also owns a number of Dunkin’ Donut establishments in the local area, including the one in Camp Hill near Holy Spirit Hospital.
____ The layout of the new facility will be similar to that one in Camp Hill, which is mainly a drive-through business with limited seating inside.
Also on Tuesday, the council granted a month-long extension for the Colgan Land Development Plan through August 11.

By Andy Sandrik

____Dillsburg (6-0), which has outscored its opponents 75-19, is one of just six Pa. teams still standing. Ensor's squad, which has a first-round bye, will try its luck in the state tournament against a team to be announced on Thursday.

Adam's Art
Artist has heart and vision

By Curt Werner

Art sales ranging from $20 to $50 will help to fund a mission trip for Settle.

____ What does it take to be an artist?
____ Not just a brush, a canvas or a paint board with many colors. It is not simply swiping a brush across a blank space.
____ An artist must have heart and at times see something that no one else can see.
____ Adam Settle, 15, is a young artist making his mark.
____ What makes Adam different from most artists is that he has a rare disease called Cobalamin-C deficiency, an inherited disorder with vitamin B-12 that involves a high risk of permanent nerve and brain damage.
____ This has not slowed him down in creating his art work.
____ "I have been painting for five or six years," Adam said. "I wondered if I could do it. Two years ago I sold my first painting and now I am trying to raise money to go on a mission trip with my church, West Shore Evangelical Free Church, to Canada. I love animals but am better at painting landscape."

Wolf Tracks
The Dog Days of Summer

By Dave Wolf

Photos by Karen Wolf.
The expression, “Dog Days of Summer,” isn’t about our canine friends taking a dip in the lake.

____ The “dog days of summer” occur during the hottest and muggiest part of the season. Webster defines “dog days” as the period between early July and early September, when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere.
____ It was once believed, and may still be, that northern pike lost their teeth during the summer months. The reasoning was that they didn’t bite when the weather was hot and muggy. The truth is that they slipped deeper into the lakes and congregated near cold water springs or streams.
____ Most of us have learned that all trout don’t go belly up during the summer, at least not those that can find cold water. But, it is wise not to bother these stressed fish, as I mistakenly did when they gathered below a coldwater tributary.
____ I have no idea why two trout took my dry fly, fought like a limp wet rag, and then rolled over and died. I do know that after that I left them alone, returning without a rod to see if they had survived. Unfortunately, many didn’t and I found their carcasses scattered along the shoreline.
