No trespassing and private property signs surround the scene of a double-murder suicide Friday night in Wellsville. Laurie Kepner, 53, and her friend, Barbara Schrum, 55, were shot to death by husband Martin Kepner, 60, before he turned the gun on himself at his residence on the 1600 block of Lisburn Road in Warrington Township, above.
____ A double-murder suicide shocked the small community of Wellsville Friday night.
____ Pennsylvania State Police recovered the bodies of Laurie Kepner, 53, and her friend, Barbara Schrum, 55, who were shot to death by Laurie’s husband Martin Kepner, 60, before shooting himself at his home, 1615 Lisburn Road, Warrington Township at 7:55 p.m. Friday May 29.
____ Laurie had moved out in December and was picking up a few belongings, York County Coroner Pam Gay said.
____ "They had the car full of things and they were trying to leave when the first shots were fired,” Gay said.
____ Gay said state police are not sure who was shot first, but it appears it may have been Barb since she was found sitting in the passenger's seat, undisturbed, still belted in. Laurie and Martin were both found on the ground outside of the car. Gay said it looked as if Laurie had tried to get away. The vehicle they had borrowed is now in the possession of PSP.
____ All three had gunshot wounds to the head; Barb had sharp force trauma to the neck, she said.
____ “What speaks volumes with this case is that we need to do a better job with ways of handling domestic violence issues,” Gay said. "It’s very sad. Three families all have had their lives irreversibly altered."
____ Gay said she was told Laurie had asked for assistance from police to go with her to get her belongings. "How do we protect people when they want to get belongings? How unfortunate it is that they are setting themselves up for their death," Gay said.
____ In response to the incident, Gay said she has spent the last several days getting in touch with legislators and law enforcement agencies to find ways to improve the system.
____ "At the same time we need to protect law enforcement who often say that are not designed to assist or don't have enough manpower," she said.
____ We really need to figure a way to reach out to people more in breakdown relationships, she said.
