Twp. swears in first female police officer
By Peggie Williams
____ Police business dominated the Carroll Township supervisors meeting on April 13.
____ Laura Solomon, the first female patrol officer to join the Carroll Township police force, was sworn into a part-time position.
____ Richard Rocco, a retired Newberry Township police officer, was conditionally approved to fill another open part-time position. He will need to complete a physical and psychological examination before the hiring process is complete.
____ Supervisors approved the purchase of a 2015 Ford Taurus Sedan police car at a cost not to exceed $50,000 including equipment. This purchase is in the budget and, according to Police Chief Tom Wargo, this purchase now puts the department in a good place to rotate one vehicle out and a new one in each year.

____ On Thursday, April 16, the Northern H.S. boys volleyball team was slated to face Red Land, away. The Polar Bears host Lower Dauphin on Tuesday, April 21 and then travel to meet Mechanicsburg on Thursday, April 23. Northern had a road match against Cedar Cliff on Tuesday as the Banner went to press.
____ On Friday, April 10, Northern played Palmyra, but the Cougars prevailed 3-2 on their home court.
____ "This was the best match the team has played so far this season, "said Head Coach Debbie Rutter. We made a change in our offense, switching to a 5-1 with Matt Simmons doing all the setting and the boys are doing well with this new system. "
____ With the Bears defense improving every match, the scores were: 20-25, 25-23,27-29,25-19, 14-16.

Girls Lacrosse earns third win of season
Submitted by Jack Armstrong

Northern's Ally Bishop looks for an opening to take a shot at the net. On Friday, April 10, the Northern Girls Lacrosse team fell to Elizabethtown at Bostic Field 17 to 7.
____ The crew of the USS Bishop continued to slog through heavy seas and eventually ran aground on the Great Carlisle Reef on Tuesday April 7 , suffering a fourth straight loss. The herd did indeed “Thunder,” defeating the visitors 25-3. Carly Burns, Alyssa Swartz and Kelly Donaldson scored for Northern while Jess Hatch (2) and Swartz (1) were credited with assists. If not for the courage of its fearless crew, the Bishop would be lost. Fortunately, a favorable tide floated the vessel off the reef just as it was listing precariously to port (it is always better in life to lean to starboard) and it was able to limp home to safe harbor for some much needed repairs.
____ There was a proverbial red sky the night before the game with Mechanicsburg, which delighted the skipper and gave the crew renewed hope that they would right the ship. Calmer seas prevailed as the Bears went full-steam ahead out to an 11-2 lead at half led by Alyssa Swartz’s five goals. Ally Bishop notched two while Annalise Armstrong, Carly Burns, Jess Hatch and Arlana Racer tallied one apiece. Armstrong (3) and Racer (2) had helpers during the 11 goal outburst. With the starters given the rest of the night off, it was all hands on deck as other players were more than ready and willing to grab the spotlight in the second 25 minutes. Northern outscored the Wildcats by one in the second half for a 14-4 final. Gabi Mowchan, RaeAnne Mummert and Megan Michaels recorded assists on goals by Sabrina Campbell, Ashley Smentkowski and Emma Strouse.
____ Carly Burns’ hat trick was the primary highlight for the home team as Northern hosted Elizabethtown on Friday April 10th in a Mid-Penn/Lancaster-Lebanon League match-up. Unfortunately for the purple and white sub-species, The Battle of the Bears at Bostic went to the blue and white color morph 17-7. Swartz (2), Racer and Bishop rounded out the scoring for the home team. Swartz and Armstrong each dropped a dime.

Show respect for all wildlife
By Dave Wolfe
Refuge visitor taunting a red fox.
____ I’m fortunate to have a family chock full of photographers, wildlife photographers, no less.
____ But, what is more important to me is that they respect the wildlife they photograph.
____ The cast of shutterbugs includes my wife Karen, my son David P., my daughter-in-law Pam, my granddaughter Michaela, and my grandson Matt. Now that the northern migration has started, I have busied myself taking waterfowl photos. I’ve been fortunate enough to take more this spring than I have in all others combined.
____ However, there is a side to photography that many people don’t understand, or even realize exists – the animal’s welfare. This should be considered above that “shot of a lifetime.” Considering that many species of waterfowl are now nesting, or preparing to, unless I can get a decent photo at a safe distance, I forgo taking the shot. Last week, I backed away from a Canada goose on a nest, simply because she became upset as I approached closer and closer. I already have photos of nesting geese and I would rather take shots of her and her goslings, than chase her from her nest, allowing any of her eggs wide open to predation.
____ As hunters and photographers, this family is used to sitting and waiting, or showing an extreme amount of patience to get the shot they want. My son has often said, “If you stay in one place long enough, you’ll see something to photograph, and when it’s a surprise, it usually is an exciting photo.” He’s right of course, and his photos prove it.
