It’s Maple Week in Dillsburg

By Peggie Williams

____ The Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society in conjunction with the Dillsburg Borough has declared the week of March 14 to 21 Maple Week in Dillsburg. The event encompasses the week between the Maple Syrup Boil at Dill's Tavern and Plantation on the first Saturday to the pancake breakfast at the Maple Shade Barn on the second Saturday. In between the two NYCHAPS events, many businesses in town will be featuring maple-related items on their menus and in their stores.
____ The week is meant to celebrate the production of maple syrup, one of the traditional agricultural activities that were so important to the people that settled North America.
____ Maple syrup production was an activity among the northeastern Native American population, taught to the European settlers, and is one of only a handful of agricultural processes not imported from Europe.
____ In all forested parts of North America, the site of tapped maple trees has become an early harbinger of spring. There are several trees in the Dillsburg area visible from the road that are now collecting sap to be turned into syrup at Dill's Tavern this Saturday.

Ross wins three matches, places fifth at state wrestling championships
By Andy Sandrik

On Saturday, March 7, Northern's Jonathan Ross fell to Michael Kemerer from Franklin Regional in the 145 pound weight class in the quarter finals in the state championship held at the Giant Center.

____ Hersheypark's Giant Center is not supposed to be an easy place for wrestlers new to the PIAA Championships, especially in Class AAA.
____ But Northern's Jonathan Ross isn't exactly new to the big stage. A year-round wrestler, Ross competes all around the country and even wrestled for a national championship his freshman season.
____ So those jitters that frighten some new to the states experience, they didn't bother Ross.
____ The Polar Bears' junior parlayed his big-match experience into a trip to the medal stand in his first trip to states last weekend.
____ Wrestling at 145 pounds, Ross cruised through the first two rounds of the tournament, lost to the eventual state champion and completed his run through the championships with a fifth-place medal.

____“My little brother Kyle, who’s almost 5 years younger than I am, has been racing since 1999. That’s how I got interested in racing,” Hannah Moody remembers. “Today, he has a fiancé, his own place, and a really good job. Yeah, many of my weekends were spent with him.”
____Hannah’s mother, Ronda, was a stay-at-home mom while Hannah and Kyle were young. Her father, Larry, retired from Harley-Davidson. “He worked a lot – sometimes 12-hour days,” Hannah said, “When he was home, he spent a lot of time with us.”
____Hannah was quick to share that the family always sat down at the table together and had a home-cooked meal. After her homework was finished, the family spent the evening together which was “really nice.” Ronda and Larry rarely missed any of her sporting events at both high school and college. “They made sure they made time for us.”
____The Moodys live in the country very close to Ski Roundtop. Most of her early memories are of her parents and grandparents. “I was close to my grandparents. When my mom started working part-time, they would watch us. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents. We were very close.” Hannah was even fortunate to meet and get to know her great-grandmother.

Last week’s answer: The Dillsburg Square

____ Several people recognized last month’s picture as the Dillsburg Square looking west down Harrisburg Street. Most put the time in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. The most prominent building to the left of the picture is no longer there; it is now the grassy area of the square and the bank’s ATM and parking lot. Tee Kelley and Beverly Davis remember that house being occupied by two ladies, but no names are remembered.
____ Kelley pointed out that if you look closely in the extreme right side of the photo you can see someone walking past the picket fence of the Shillito house that once housed Dr, Crawford’s office and was recently purchased by Duane Stone to hold his law offices.
____ The house farther back in the center of the picture is 11 W. Harrisburg Street and now belongs to Clair and Linda Zeiders.
____ Ruth Kirkland Torsello told us of the days she lived there with her family. Widower Leigh Kirkland, a butcher by trade for Swift and
