____ Hundreds of people braved the cold and icy waters for the Polar Bear Plunge at Gifford Pinchot State Park Saturday Jan. 31. Barry Stetler, of Enola, arrived inside a giant Jack in the Box. He received special recognition for collecting over $15,000 in donations. All proceeds from the event go to the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania.

____ A garage on Scotch Pine Road was destroyed by fire Friday evening, Jan. 30 at 7:28 p.m.
The structure was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived to fight the blaze in 18 degree temperature. Tankers were used to truck in water.

Senator Casey asks watchdog officials to review

____Interest rates of 9 percent for a television and more than 300 percent for a laptop are not uncommon when consumers rent to own.
____“These rates not only dwarf those of high-interest credit cards; if RTO deals were classified as loans, they would also violate most states’ usury laws,” said Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr., D-PA, in a letter to the federal government’s top consumer watchdogs, asking the Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to carefully review the protections in place for consumers.
____These agreements can be a useful vehicle for consumers, but it requires constant vigilance to ensure that consumers aren’t being treated unfairly,” Casey said.____
____York, Cumberland, Franklin and other counties in the area are home to several Rent-a-Centers. Xavier Dominicis, vice president of public affairs for Rent-A-Center, said that as of Jan. 30, the company had an A-rating with the national Better Business Bureau.
____“The industry is amply regulated at the state level,” Dominicis said. “We do have a code of ethics and we do take complaints very seriously.”

Before the game against Big Spring, seniors Brooke Houseal and Lizzie Horn were honored with their parents.
____In girls varsity basketball, Northern hosted Big Spring this past Tuesday night in the Lady Bears' season finale. On Senior Night, the visitors used a strong second half to finish with a 41-21 win. Brooke Houseal and Maddie Waits posted four points apiece for Northern. Other Lady Polar Bear scorers included Lizzie Horn (3), Kennedy Barber (2), Catherine Brubaker (2), Maggie Frey (2), Gabrielle Mowchan (2) and Alyssa Swartz (2). Nicole Thuemmel led the visitors with 22 points.
____In a rescheduled game, Northern hosted Greencastle last Wednesday, January 28 but the Lady Blue Devils stayed undefeated with a 57-10 win. Lizzie Horn led Northern with five points. Brooke Houseal added three points and Kennedy barber scored two points. Jenay Faulkner led Greencastle with 20 points.

____ Northern's junior high wrestling program had plenty of reasons to smile after hosting last weekend's Northern Jr. High Invitational Tournament.
____ The Polar Bears had five placewinners -- Liam Strouse (75 pounds, 2nd place), Pierce Feite (85, 3rd), Evan Chapman (80, 4th), Kyle Swartz (130, 6th) and Peyton Merovich (155, 6th) -- and rolled up 105.5 points to finish 13th out of 20 teams.
____ The tournament was won by Northampton, which scored 235.5 points to edge Cumberland Valley (229) for the team championship.

____ Senior Night is slated for this Thursday, February 5 as the Northern H.S. boys basketball team hosts Chambersburg in a non-league game.
____ Northern evened its Mid Penn Colonial Division record to 6-6 on Tuesday, February 3, as they defeated Big Spring 56-42. Ben Anderson and Eric Jacobs led Northern with 13 points apiece as the visiting Polar Bears jumped out to a 25-17 first half lead. Scott Leitholf added 12 points for Northern while Owen Clendaniel contributed eight points. Curtis Robison and Nick Sacoman scored four points apiece and Jack McKenzie added two points. Ryker Armond led the Bulldogs with 14 points and Nick Black added 13 points.
____ Against Boiling Springs on January 29, Garret McHenry poured in 20 points to lead the Bubblers over the Polar Bears 53-35. Eric Jacobs scored 10 points to lead Northern. Ben Anderson and Scott Leitholf added six points apiece. Other scores included Jack Mckenzie (4), Bobby Shelly (3), Owen Clendaniel (2), Curtis Robison (2) and Nick Sacoman (2).
