____ A small gathering of relatives and friends of the late WWII Marine veteran Lt. Glenn Lee Bowers attended a bridge dedication ceremony Wednesday at noon underneath the Route 15 overpass that spans the Yellow Breeches at the county line.
____ The bridge that connects York and Cumberland counties will now be known as the Glenn Bowers Memorial Bridge.
____ Bowers’ son, Toby Bowers, and his sister Tina Baker unveiled the new sign.
____ “I can’t begin to tell you what it means and how it feels,” Toby said. “I was blindsided and awestruck. Mike (Regan) went above and beyond to make this happen.”
____ Rep. Mike Regan, who led the dedication, said the idea came to him when he was out canvassing for votes and met Carroll Township patrolman Tom Kibler.
____ After learning Glenn was a fighter pilot with the Black Sheep Squadron, Regan knew he had to do something to honor Glenn’s memory.

____ A vacationer snapping photos with a professional-looking camera could be seen as engaging in a commercial activity under the current proposal put forth by the U.S. Forest Service. "The public lands become the way by which we know we are democratic. We own them." The man who said that was Char Miller, biographer of Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the United States Forest Service.
____ The so-called “professional media photographer” faces daily challenges, especially if they photograph wildlife and the outdoors. The weather is always a limiting factor, as is the sun’s position, poor light and of course finding the wildlife they would like to photograph.
____ But recently, rules introduced by the U.S. Forest Service has reared its ugly head, or at least someone has sat up and paid attention to what many consider the misuse of power. Cameras, and bloggers have become part of the American scene in recent years, and there is a serious fear that the proposed permit is too blurred to differentiate one from another. Defining what is a “commercial venture” and what isn’t, is more difficult than one can imagine.

____ Warrington Township residents who are newly affected by the changes to the federal flood map will be notified by the township so they understand the changes and how to react to them. At the September 17 session, supervisors noticed that 258 properties are now affected by flood map changes compared to 147 in 2009, the last year the map was updated.
____ Residents who are affected can appeal the changes within a 90-day appeal period, which ends on November 28. Part of the notification will explain that process, which is somewhat lengthy and will involve some costs to produce the required material. Still, the cost of the process is likely less than the cost of flood insurance, though affected residents will need to compare the details first.
____ Supervisors will also write Congressman Scott Perry and let him know about their concerns with the mapping process, which reportedly involved no physical studies and was done largely from aerial maps.

Jerre and Pat Miller help Nate Layne put on his tank and regulator.
____ Most 14-year-old boys lead an active life playing baseball or soccer.
____Running to first base or kicking a soccer ball comes naturally. Northern’s Sam Geiser picks up yardage for the Polar Bears Friday night against Waynesboro.
____ It's Homecoming weekend and Northern hosts Big Spring this Friday night at Bostic Field in a Mid Penn Colonial Division contest. The Polar Bears (2-3 overall) fell to 1-1 in the league after their loss to Waynesboro last week. After a 28-17 loss to James Buchanan, the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 in the Colonial and 2-3 overall.
____ For Northern, one key to victory this week will be stopping the big plays like Waynesboro displayed last Friday night in Dillsburg. Totaling 425 passing yards, the Indians cruised to a 40-25 win over Northern. The visitors used two pass plays early to take a 14-0 lead.
____ With under two minutes left in the first quarter, the hosts marched downfield with quarterback Curtis Robison finding Sam Geiser on a slant route for 40 yards. Bunched up by the Waynesboro defense, Northern settled for an Aiden Alves 27-yard field goal. Waynesboro's no-huddle, hurry up offense kept Northern off balance but the Bears held tough on the next two series. Jake Cromer capped things with a highlight interception at 8:30 in the second quarter, effectively taking the ball out of the receiver's grasp. Northern, however, could not capitalize on the pick.
