Cub captured in Upper Allen Twp.
By Dave Wolf
____ A black bear nosing around Dillsburg and Mechanicsburg for the past week or so was captured Tuesday.
____ William McCurdy reported seeing the bear on Saturday, July 12 at 9:30 a.m. as he was traveling on Campground Road, just off Rt. 74, heading toward Mt. Olivet.
____ McCurdy was quick enough to capture the moment with his camera through the windshield of his car.
____ “My daughter Alexandra named him Fred,” McCurdy said.
____ Around the same time, Melissa Shultz spotted the cub crossing Rt. 74 where the old railroad tracks used to be, near the Spring Lane and Campground Road intersection.
____ Fred, it seems, had gained a reputation by showing up in populated areas on a regular basis.

The single-lane bridge on Bishop Road spanning the Yellow Bridges Creek in Monaghan Township was temporarily closed July 1. Officials are considering making the closing permanent since the bridge is 116 years old and is rapidly approaching the end of its useful lifespan.
____ Several Monaghan Township officials were planning to attend an informational meeting at the Upper Allen building on July 15 to hear discussions about the possible permanent closing of a bridge on Bishop Road.
____ A letter posted on the township’s website from Kirk Stoner, Cumberland County director of planning, indicates the bridge was closed temporarily on July 1.
____ The letter goes on to say that the single-lane bridge would cost $500,000 to replace and, at 116 years old, is “rapidly approaching the end of its useful lifespan.” Also noted was that the 2008 built Gilbert Road bridge is just 2,800 feet from the Bishop Rd. bridge, which Stoner described as an alternative travel route.
____ A resident of that area along the Yellow Breeches Creek attended the session to report her unhappiness about the possible closing of the Bishop Road bridge. She also reported the Gilbert Road bridge has a lot of spray graffiti on it, especially underneath the bridge, which has become a magnet for parties with alcohol and marijuana. That issue was reported to the local police representative, who was also attending the supervisors’ meeting.

____ In a three to two vote, Carroll Township supervisors ratified a five year contract for services between the township police and Dillsburg Borough. The two dissenting votes were from Ed Coble and Mark McCurdy.
____ “It was a good contract except it was too long,” said Coble in an interview after the meeting. “A lot can happen in five years.”
____ The contract will now go to the borough council for their approval.
____ Contract talks are continuing with Monaghan Township.
____ At the request of Police Chief Thomas Wargo, supervisors authorized $4,700 to upgrade the computer modems in the police vehicles from 3G to 4G. The money for this will be taken from a budget line item for a part-time clerical position and moved into the technology account.

Hiking Club Members prepare for a day of work on the Mason-Dixon Trail. Pictured from left are Jim Hooper, Bernie Frick, Dave Strine, Tim Schmidt, Ron Gray and Curt Ashenfelter.
____ Some people seem to believe that trails require no maintenance, like a deer trail they just meander through the woods and along the fields. But nothing in life is that easy, and while most trail users are wise stewards of the land, many do not become involved in trail work.
____ But, a handful of men gathered on Game Lands 242, where the Pennsylvania Game Commission approved a project to move the Mason-Dixon trail off of roads and into the woodlands and fields. Game Land 242 is between Pinchot State Park and Dillsburg.
____ We met on a cool, overcast day during the work week. Six members of various trail clubs with a connection to the Keystone Trails Association (KTA), gathered in the parking lot. Curt Ashenfelter, executive director of KTA handed me a packet of information, while another member Jim Hooper, president of the Mason-Dixon Trail System, gave me a candy bar.
____ I asked Jim Hooper why they called the trail head Whisky Springs. With a shrug of his shoulders he replied, "It was named that because a guy used the spring to keep his whiskey cool."

____ Kyle Ramp's 9-10 all-star baseball squad had high expectations and big dreams for the Little League postseason.
____ But the best players Dillsburg Youth Baseball could offer fell just short in their bid to win a third consecutive District 14 title, losing to York 7-6 on Wednesday in the championship round of the double-elimination tournament.
____ It wasn't the finish Ramp's team had hoped for, but it was still a decent showing. Dillsburg finished the postseason with a 6-2 record, scoring more than 10 runs in five of those games. Ramp's boys outscored their competition by a combined 96-47 score.
____ "I think the kids did a great job. I'm very, very impressed with the boys hitting the ball and pitching," Ramp said. "The team grew as one. We went into this thing with a couple kids who were standouts and we walked out with 12 players who were strong together. I can't thank the coaches and parents enough. They did a great job with these kids."
