The bridge on Route 15 crossing Yellow Breeches Creek, just north of Dillsburg on the York and Cumblerland county line, is to be named the Glenn Bowers Memorial Bridge.

____ The bridge on Route 15 crossing Yellow Breeches Creek, just north of Dillsburg on the York and Cumblerland county line, is to be named the Glenn Bowers Memorial Bridge. House Bill 1831, designating the naming, passed the House with a unamimous vote last week, Rep. Mike Regan said.
____ A ceremony under the bridge is scheduled for July 4, Regan said.
____ “This bridge naming honors an outstanding man who served with distinction in World War II and then returned home to carve out a fine career in the Pennsylvania Game Commission,” Regan said. “It is appropriate that the bridge over Yellow Breeches Creek will now bear his name.”
____ “I am indebted to Regan for his interest in keeping the memories of WWII veterans alive, especially my Dad’s,” Toby Bowers, Glenn’s son said. He and his sister, Tina Baker, are “very honored.”
____ “Dad always said he was not a hero - the real heroes did not come home alive,” Toby said. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think something like this would happen.”
____ Toby sadly noted that his Dad’s passing was this week four years ago.

Glenn Bowers, a WWII veteran and member of the Black Sheep Squadron under Col. “Pappy” Boyington from September 1943 to January 1944 will have the Rt. 15 bridge over the Yellow Breeches Creek named after him.

Baby groundhog from Dillsburg to join Punxsutawney clan on Gobbler’s Knob
By Curt Werner

Dan Bush hand feeds a baby groundhog he found earlier this spring. Named Phmonty his new home is at Gobbler's Knob.

____ It was a typical day in late Spring with the smell of fresh cut grass filling the air.
____ Dan Bush was on his tractor doing his weekly mowing of approximately 25 acres at the Pa. Agriculture Education Center adjacent from the Williams Grove Steam Engine  Association.  Halfway through cutting the high grass in the large pasture, he felt a bump.  Turning his head, he saw a groundhog lying dead.  Dan did not see the groundhog while cutting the grass and when he was finished went back to the spot where the accident happened.  To his surprise, a baby groundhog, only a few day, old, was nearby.  He did not want to touch it and left the baby groundhog undisturbed.  A few hours passed and Dan was concerned for the safety of the baby groundhog, so he returned to check on it.  It was at the exact place where he last saw it.  Fearing it would die without its mother, he picked it up and took it home.
____ The next step, "how do you take care of a baby groundhog?"  With a little investigative work Dan purchased syringes, honey and powdered baby formula.  That did the trick.  For the next few days he and his family fed the groundhog every two to three hours around the clock.  The groundhog would only consume one syringe of formula.  After three days it went up to two syringes of formula.  The baby groundhog was getting comfortable  with people and liked being wrapped in a blanket.  Dan's son, Logan, was getting attached to the groundhog.
____ After three weeks, the Bush's knew they could not keep the groundhog.  A call to the Hershey Zoo was made and they would not accept the groundhog.  Then, a light bulb went off.  Let's call the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

Elk watching in Benezette
By Dave Wolf

A yearling peers over a cow’s back at Winslow Hill.

____ We were standing there on top of Winslow Hill, a place traditionally visited in late August or early September. We wanted to capture the place during a different time and maybe find a calf to photograph or a bull in velvet.
____ Both of us expected to find the Visitors Center on Winslow Hill deserted, but it was soon obvious we would not be alone. Although the amount of people there was about 10-percent of what we found in late August, when the bulls were bugling and screaming, there was still a good number of people walking the trails and pulling off the road at other well-known viewing areas.
____ The rather sleepy town of Benezette was waking up, as was the Visitors Center that began opening 7-days a week, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Some of the businesses in the area were open a few days a week—mostly weekends—but began to realize that the tourists were arriving in full force.
____ As we have in the past, we phoned Ginger Gardner, owner of the Bennett House Bed & Breakfast. We had stayed there in the past and found the Bennett House to our liking. Ginger keeps a nice place and whips up a tremendous breakfast. She is a genuine lady and if she can help your stay be more pleasant, she will.
