Jim Russell, president of the Michigan-based Amy Foundation, presents the $10,000 first place Amy Writing Award to Dillsburg journalist Carolyn Kimmel for a story that appeared in the Dillsburg Banner covering two missionary doctors from Dillsburg.
____ Dillsburg journalist Carolyn Kimmel won first place in the national Amy Foundation Writing Awards for a story that appeared in The Dillsburg Banner about two missionary doctors from Dillsburg who practice medicine in the African bush.
____ Kimmel wrote a story last fall about Dr. John Spurrier and Dr. Phil Thuma, who began working at Macha Hospital, located in Zambia, in the mid-1970s as missionaries for the Grantham-based Brethren in Christ Church and have worked there intermittently ever since.
____ “I had a great story to tell. These are two inspiring men who pour out their lives to help others and sacrifice a lot of their personal comfort, but they say they are the ones who are blessed,” said Kimmel, who traveled to Lansing, Mich. last week where she received the $10,000 first place award during the annual Michigan Prayer Breakfast, which drew more than 700 attendees.
____ The Amy Foundation, based in Lansing, honors faith-based stories that are skillfully and creatively written and that show Biblical principles to be relevant to today’s issues. To be eligible for consideration, submitted articles must be published in a secular, non-religious publication and must be reinforced with at least one Bible passage.

____ Wellsville Borough’s recent discovery of needed sewer line repairs and a changed sewer billing practice made at least two residents unhappy. One has filed a complaint against a sewer authority lien, and another felt he should not be liable for a crushed sewer lateral.
____ The complaint was filed by William Bourne of Chestnut Street A letter from the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission read at council’s June 2 meeting reported that Bourne alleges discrimination and retaliation against him by the borough. A fact-finding conference has been set for August 5 in Harrisburg to go over the complaint. Both parties will present documents and other evidence.
____ The second resident who was unhappy with the charge for the crushed sewer lateral was told he would not need to pay for the replacement work, as it appears the damage was caused during sidewalk construction. If so, the contractor for the project would be liable for the damage. Typically, homeowners are responsible for any part of the sewer line lateral off the main line. However, in this case the damage was apparently caused not by routine wear or the homeowner.

____ They call it camp, a place where people go to engage in an outdoor activity. It is intended to be an escape from daily routines that can limit your range of thinking and appreciation.
____ This past week I over-packed all the gear that I thought I might need. I took an arsenal of flies, leaders, rods, and reels loaded with fly line. I took fishing shirts and jeans, waders, a fly fishing vest and two raincoats. As usual, I used a third of what I took with me.
____ The now traditional “summit” was something that we had been doing for years on end. The same week each and every year.
____ I went for two reasons, one was that the fishing is usually good at this time of the year, and we most often found hungry trout willing to take our flies. The other reason is that you need to go—some people simply don’t understand the need to recharge your batteries and renew friendships—perhaps the most important ingredient of the trip.
Attendees are fortunate to have a host like Karl Power, who opens his “mountain home” to people from all walks of life. Karl not only opens what he refers to as his second home, but he cooks some of the best meals you’ll ever eat, as long as you do the dishes and make the coffee that is always brewing.
