By Peggie Williams

Al Kauffman, owner of Manetenance Barber Styling, assisted by Dillsburg Mayor Wendell Hollinger, cuts the ribbon during his grand opening celebration on Saturday, March 22 at his new location, 14 S. Baltimore St., Dillsburg.

____ The barber’s pole in front of Al Kauffman’s Mantenance Barber Styling disappeared briefly from S. Baltimore Street in Dillsburg, where it had hung since 1998. But before anyone even had a chance to notice it was gone, it reappeared a half block to the north at Kauffman’s new location at 14 S. Baltimore Street.
____ A grand opening was held on March 22.
____ Kauffman gave his first haircut at the new location just one day shy of 20 years from the day he gave his first professional hair cut. Tom Gruber was in the barber’s chair both of those times.
____ Kauffman’s journey began as a teen when he started giving haircuts to friends and family. He learned to cut hair out of self defense. “My grandfather always cut our hair when we were kids,” explained Kauffman. “He had two styles, buzz cut or an old man’s cut. I learned to give myself a haircut to avoid going to Pap for one.” It wasn’t long before others in his family were coming to him.
____ But it was in 1992, while he was running a restaurant on Baltimore Street with his mother, that Richard Marino, who owned the barbershop next door, convinced him to go to barber’s school and get his license. He worked for Marino from 1994 to 1998 and then bought the business when Marino retired.
____ Manetenance Barber Styling was born. The play on words for the name just popped into his head.

Officials commend pilot for not hitting anything in Forge Road crash
By Andrew Carr, The Sentinal

Pennsylvania State Police and emergency crews work to clear the scene of a plane crash at the intersection of Forge and Hunter roads, South Middleton Township at 11:15 p.m. Monday night.

____ It came as a shock to Edgar Spurlin that the plane he sold Monday was involved in a crash later that day.
____ The 1959 fixed-wing Cessna 172 that crashed shortly after 11 p.m. Monday was previously registered to Spurlin, whose registration said he was from Pittsfield, Mass. Spurlin’s registration expired in June 2012, and he has been trying to sell his single-engine plane ever since.
____ Spurlin now living in Canaan, N.Y., told The Sentinel he sold the plane Monday to Chuck McClure, 59, of Washington state.
____ The FAA, which is handling the investigation, did not officially release the name of the pilot, but Spurlin said he sold the plane earlier that day to McClure, in which a bill of sale was exchanged.
____ “I remember when I bought it 20 years ago it was the same thing — I gave the guy a bill of sale and then I registered it,” Spurlin said. “What he does with it after he pays for it, that is his business really.”
____ Spurlin, who owned the plane for 20 years and never had an incident, said McClure test flew the plan without a problem, but McClure had left after the sale.
____ “I didn’t even know he was leaving with the plane,” he said. “I had to leave, I got a phone call, I had to leave right in the middle of us talking, and awhile later someone said, ‘Oh, he took off.’”
