A long line of volunteers from Dillsburg Calvary United Methodist Church pack food bags at “Mission Control” in Silver Spring Township last week to benefit the needy of Bethesda Mission.
____ On the fourth Friday of every month, a dedicated group of volunteers from the Cavalry United Methodist Church in Dillsburg gather together to pack bags of groceries for the less fortunate.
____ Last month the group celebrated a milestone, packing the 20,000th grocery bag full of non-perishable items - an estimated 270,000 pounds of food.
____ The small group of about eight meets at “Mission Central,” in Silver Spring Township, where they spend three hours stuffing bags, assembly-line style, in order to meet the needs of rural residents.
____ Zach Kinard, Director of Outreach Ministry at Bethesda Mission, said the group has been volunteering since 2006. “Because we rely on volunteers to really do the work that will get the food in the hands of people who need it most, we are especially thankful for their dedication,” he said.
____ Each month the group packs about 425 bags of food, which makes them responsible for 25 percent of the 1,500 total food bags Bethesda Mission distributes each month.
____ Officials at the mission presented the group with a plaque on February 28 to recognize their efforts and to commemorate the milestone before the group filed into the warehouse to begin their work.

____ A flock of red-breasted robins, hundreds of them, bursting with song, flitted about the tree tops behind Dillsburg Banner office Tuesday afternoon.
____ Many have long believed the appearance of red robins are a sure sign of spring and warm weather soon to follow. But for the Dillsburg area, Mother Nature may have other plans.
____ According to Accuweather the coldest weather is likely over. A number of March record low temperatures were set Tuesday. Highs are forecast to be in the 30s on Thursday, well below the average high in the middle 40s. Temperatures will slowly climb to near the 40s by Friday.
____ However, "Additional waves of cold air will move southeastward from northern Canada during much of March and into April in the Midwest and the East," long range weather expert Paul Pastelok said.

____ At its February meeting, the Northern York County School Board was ready to appoint Erin Rupp as a tax collector for Franklin Township to serve in the position formerly held by Clyde Flohr, who won reelection in November but had since passed away.
____ However, in the several days between the board work session on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and the board meeting on Thursday, Feb. 20, Franklin Township Supervisor Naomi Decker first learned of the school board’s proposed action. So, she attended the school board meeting with former Franklin Township Supervisor Bill Lastoskie, who was unanimously appointed as the new tax collector for the township on January 9.
____ According to Decker, it had been painful for Flohr to give up the position during his illness. Upon his death, Rupp was appointed to collect the remainder of the 2013 school taxes.
____ “Until Tuesday, I did not realize that the school board wanted a say in whomever the township chose as tax collector,” she told the board.
____ “We would appreciate having one tax collector to avoid confusion,” she added.
____ Decker asked the board to take the time to look at Lastoskie’s resume.

____ Northern senior wrestler Kyle Koser has dominated just about every competitor he’s seen this season.
____ And if Koser can manage just four more victories, he’ll be able to call himself a state champion.
____ Koser will be the lone Polar Bear in competition at this weekend’s PIAA Class AAA Championships, to be held at the Giant Center in Hershey.
____ Koser, the District 3-AAA champion, will be competing in a loaded 182-pound bracket that features the very best the state has to offer. There will be no easy match in this tournament.
____ With that said, Koser is here for a reason -- he’s demolished just about everyone that’s crossed his path.
