Snow and ice blanket region, more to come
By Peggie Williams

____ The Dillsburg area is once again feeling the effects of winter, but the last two storms were different from all the prior storms this season because the snow was wet and heavy, and ice and freezing rain were also involved.
____ Sunday night the area was blanketed with over 5 inches of wet heavy snow and then Tuesday night the area was covered with up to a half inch of ice causing trees to bend, branches to break, power lines to come down and roads to ice up.
____ The Tuesday night storm has blanketed over 1,500 square miles of the north east with snow and affected more than one million people, but locally the Dillsburg area seems to have fared welled.
____ Met-Ed First Energy has reported as many as 70,000 customers without power in the York County area, but the southern end of the county accounted for most of them.
____ Duane Kanagy with Adams Electric Cooperative said they had between 1800 to 2000 people without service from Dover to Dillsburg, but his crews are keeping up and most of the power has been restored.
____ “It’s all ice on the lines and trees,” he said.

Dillsburg residents dig themselves out Monday morning. The area received over 5 inches of snow Sunday night and up to a half-inch of ice Tuesday night.

Don Charles Foulds brings his beauty business to Dillsburg
By Stephanie Kalina-Metzger

Owner Don Foulds styles the hair of long-time friend Ginger Forney at his new shop, The Spalon which just opened on North Second Street in Dillsburg Borough.

____ Don Charles Foulds knows beauty. The Dillsburg resident, who has been in the business for decades, has owned several salons throughout the years. While working for Zotos, a professional hair care product line, he ran 14 salons across the state.
____ Foulds said he was on the road “a lot” until recently and decided it was time to set up shop in the community where he has lived for nearly two decades with his wife Karen and his two daughters. “I needed to get behind the chair again,” he said.
____ When he learned that CKS antique shop was downsizing and a space would be available at the Second Street plaza, he jumped at the chance to transform the space into a beauty oasis which he named The Spalon.
____ You can say beauty is in Foulds’ blood. “I’m a fourth generation hairdresser. My great-grandfather was a barber, my grandfather apprenticed with my great-grandfather to become a barber and my mother was a stylist. I then became a stylist, and my sister also does hair. My 17-year-old daughter Abigail does hair as well and she’ll eventually work here with me,” said Foulds. His 15-year-old daughter Danielle may too become a convert. “She came in here a few times and hung out with me and is talking about going to school for it now,” said Folds.

Doll’s Automotive:
Back and better than ever

By Stephanie Kalina-Metzger

Andrew Koretzky, Ken Doll Jr. holding Buddy and Kendra Doll in front of their automotive business on Poplar Road.

____Ken Doll can’t envision himself being in any other business than the automotive biz. “My dad and I worked on cars together since I was eight-years-old. He was a full-time welder and we worked on cars on the side for people. I enjoyed tinkering with anything that ran—autos, tractors, motorcycles, you name it,” he said.
____The automobile enthusiast continued to pursue his passion as an adult, working as a diesel mechanic in the National Guard and at a local RV and camper sales business, also as a mechanic. As the years passed, however, he found himself yearning to be his own boss. He eventually decided to take the plunge, opening up an automotive business on Poplar Road in Dillsburg. “Some of the customers who got to know me and my work followed me to my new business,” said Doll. Everything went smoothly until January 31, 2007, when disaster struck and the business caught fire. Area residents will likely recall the incident, which was caused by a furnace malfunction and was covered extensively by this newspaper.
____For a time, the beleaguered family struggled to get back on their feet. They not only grieved for their lost business, but for the family dog that perished in the fire.
____“We lost everything. We had insurance coverage for $275 thousand and determined that we lost more than $400 thousand in just tools alone, not even counting the building,” said Doll, of those dark days. The challenges seemed insurmountable. “We lost everything we had worked for years to build in just one hour,” he said.

Ashley Davis and her son, Rhys. Ashley will be in attendance at the Dillsburg Area Soccer Club’s blood drive on Monday, Feb. 10 at Arnold’s United Methodist Church on Mountain Road.

____Hemorrhaging badly with her life on the line, help was there when Ashley Davies needed it the most, thanks to a blood donor.
Now, for the first time in her life, Davies is ready to give back by donating blood.
____The wife of Dillsburg Area Soccer Club Dragons coach Gaz Davies will be in attendance at the team's second annual blood drive on Monday, Feb. 10 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at Arnold's United Methodist Church on 412 Mountain Road in Dillsburg.
____Davies will not only be facing her fear of needles to donate blood, she will also be there with the goal of talking at least one person into donating.
____“I'm hoping to talk someone who's not eager to do it to give it a go. We can do it together,” Davies said. “I took blood from 35 people. I will gladly give it back no matter what a little pinch feels like or how woozy I get.”
