Community pitches in to lend support
Photo and story by Curt Werner

A firefighter prepares to battle flames shooting out of a mobile home Friday morning, January 10 at 11:15 a.m. in Walmar Manor, Franklin Township. Two family members were home at the time of the fire and one member sought medical care, officials said. Cause of the fire is still under investigation. The home was declared a total loss.
Over seven fire companies responded including Franklintown, Dillsburg, Lake Meade, York Springs, Mechanicsburg, Upper Allen, East Berlin and Hampden as well as Dillsburg ambulance and fire police and Northern Regional police.

____ The lives of the Harrison family were changed forever after a fire destroyed their home Friday, January 10.
____ Kayla Harrison was in her mobile home that eventful day with her two-year-old son, Ethan, going about her usual morning routine, when she started to smell smoke. Looking about, she could see smoke in the hallway, coming from the bedroom. Quickly she ran back to investigate only to see the shock of a lifetime - flames.
____ Without hesitation, she grabbed her son, ran out the door and placed him inside their car, away from the danger. Kayla then ran back into the burning home to save four cats - two pets and two strays.
____ She was able to grab two, with no problem, and left the door open for the others; they soon ran out after she called for them. All four cats were unharmed and placed in the car.

Clothes, toys and household items line the stage of the Franklintown Fire Company Sunday shortly before being boxed for the Harrison family who lost all their belongings in a house fire Friday morning in Franklin Township.

Pennsylvania State Police Capt. Steven Junkin speaks to the media at a press conference held at the Chambersburg barracks Friday morning. Standing beside him are law enforcement representatives from West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, members of the tri-state task force.

____ A multi-state task force has determined there is no connection between the Monaghan Township road rage incident involving gunfire and the one that occurred in Antrim Township, Franklin County where a Maine man was shot and killed; both took place last weekend.
____ “We believe with a reasonable level of certainty the two incidents are not related,” Pennsylvania State Police Capt. Steven Junkin said Friday morning at a press conference at the Chambersburg barracks. Laboratory analysis of evidence collected from both scenes and the victims’ statements led investigators to this decision, Junkin said, not elaborating on any specific details.
____ Timothy Davison, 28, of Poland, Maine was killed Jan. 4 at about 2:10 a.m. while traveling home on Route 81. Police said Davison made calls to 911 saying he was being pursued by a Ford Ranger truck and an occupant was shooting at him, as he was on Interstate 70 in Maryland until he was forced off the road onto the median near mile marker 3 on Route 81 in Pennsylvania, a distance over 10 miles. After forcing Davison's SUV off the road, an occupant got out of the truck and shot him. The victim died at York Hospital, Police said.
____ The pickup truck headed south toward Maryland when it left the crime scene, Junkin said, adding that this was a random shooting and there is nothing to indicate the shooter knew the victim.

Pack the House win!
By Joe Guty

Hannah Grant and Ashley Barber jump high doing a cheer at the Boys Varsity Basketball game against Steel High.

____With a gritty 55-51 win against James Buchanan, Northern did not disappoint fans at Pack the House Night last Saturday, January 11. The Polar Bears kept everyone on the edge of their seats to improve to 5-8 on the season. The Rockets fell to 2-10 in the non-league contest.
____Northern played steady throughout despite a few scares as they faced the Rocket's 6-5 Ryan Hege. Hege had little trouble posting some easy points under the basket. Displaying ball control and competitive attitude, the Bears held a slim 17-15 first quarter lead and 29-28 halftime edge.
____After an even 12-12 third, Northern pulled away enough in the fourth quarter. Ryan Schreiber and Eric Jacobs converted steals to baskets in the waning seconds. Players off the bench - like Owen Clendaniel who made a nifty put back for two and Curtis Robison adding a basket - helped to spark the home team.

The Northern Polar Bears fell to Steel High 62 to 54 on Monday, Jan. 13, at home. In photo Jason Johnson is fouled going to the basket in the third quarter of play.

____Northern (2-3, 2-1 Capital) continues to show improvements across the board. The Polar Bears have two wrestlers, senior Kyle Koser and sophomore Jonathan Ross, competing for the right to be called Northern's best.
____Each wrestler went 3-0 last week to run their respective win totals to 12 victories apiece. Koser, at 182 pounds, is now 12-1 with nine of those wins coming by fall. Ross, a 138-pounder who has spent much of the season wrestling up at 145, is 12-2 with four pins.
____Heavyweight Noah Smith went 3-0 last week to improve to 9-4. Four of Smith's wins this season have come by fall.
____The Polar Bears continue their division schedule today with a match at unbeaten Milton Hershey (4-0, 4-0 Capital) before traveling to the Elizabethtown Challenge Tournament on Saturday.
