Business at Baker Stoves shows
no signs of cooling down

Stephanie Kalina-Metzger

Nancy Baker, above, and her husband Art founded Baker Stoves in the late 1970’s. Today the company is showing no signs of cooling down. Nancy is helped by her son, David and grandson, Austin.

____When Arthur Baker, a self-employed woodworker crafted his own wood stove to heat his shop, little did he know that it would become a big hit with his friends. Baker, a knowledgeable and endearing individual, had quite a few friends, according to his wife, Nancy. “Our house was always open to everyone,” she said.
____Other stoves paled in comparison to the one Arthur made for his shop, which incorporated a combination baffle system and heating chamber. The design was head and shoulders above all others, extracting the maximum amount of heat from the wood that would otherwise be lost up the chimney. It certainly trumped the simple little black boxes that were standard at the time.
____Word of the stove seemed to spread like wildfire. Soon, conducting business at the old homestead became a headache for the couple who were raising several sons and a daughter at the time.
____The last straw may have been when Nancy received a call around midnight for a stove. “It reached the point where I couldn’t sleep. All I kept hearing was the phone ringing in my ears,” she said, with a chuckle. “It was like a gold rush back in 1977 due to the rising cost of oil,” said Nancy, “so we said, ‘we may as well go into business.’”

____It is that time of year again for Special Olympic Speed Skating.  Brett Eshenour has been coaching the Northern Special Olympic speed skaters for over 25 years.  The team skates from October to February at the old Hershey Arena.  "We have Special Olympic athletes that are Northern students, Northern graduates, Dillsburg residents and Northern Students Unified Partners that participate in the Special Olympics Area M Speed Skating,"  said Eshenour.  "We will have at least six skaters and two unified partners advance to the Winter Olympics to be held in Johnstown on February 9, 10 and 11.  More than three hundred athletes from Pennsylvania along with  one hundred and fifty coaches and fifteen hundred volunteers will be at this event," continued Eshenour.
____The last Special Olympic speed skating event was held  Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the old Hershey Arena.  Northern graduate Chris Erhardt competed in the 111, 222, and 333 Meter short track events.  Jen Stephens competed in the 333, 500 and 777 Meter short track.  Derek Eshenour competed in the 500, 1000 and 1500 Meter short track events.  Erhardt, Stephens and Eshenour also competed in the state competition this past year.  Stephens and Eshenour both competed at the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Nagano Japan in Short Track Speed Skating.

The thrill of sports, it never gets boring
By Curt Werner

____I have been covering sports for over 30 years.  From five-year-olds playing soccer or picking up a bat for the first time to collegiate and pro-football.  I have watched countless extra inning games, overtime in football and basketball and shoot-outs in other sporting events.
____Many of the games I cover have a predictable outcome. In many of the games, I root for the underdog.  There is nothing better than seeing a team come from behind to win.   How a team wins is what makes the game exciting.    A last second shot, a 50-yard field goal or a Hail Mary pass.
____I love seeing something at a game that I have never seen before.  That is one reason fans keep coming back to watch a team play or watch an individual doing their best.
____Last Wednesday, Nov. 20th, I went to the Hershey Arena to watch and photograph speed skating.  It was my first time to cover this event.  The athletes were young and old.  The arena was not crowded but the laughter of the athletes echoed around the glass that surrounded the ice.
____Many of these athletes have been speed skating for many years and many had buddies with them.  They all wore helmets, knee pads and elbow pads.  It was safety first.
