____Six people applied for two vacant zoning hearing board positions, causing Warrington Township Chairman Dean Trump to remark it was “fantastic that so many were interested” and noting this level of interest had never been seen before.
____Ultimately, the two named to the board were Jackie Van Pelt, who is a consulting engineer with degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering, and Lisa Fry, who is a zoning officer in nearby York Township but who has lived in Warrington since 1990.
____Chairman Trump noted that the choices were made more difficult by the qualifications of those who applied, which also included a high school government teacher, a local contractor and a college student with a degree in public administration who is an intern at the Dept. of Aging. Chairman Trump hoped that all those not chosen would stay interested in local government for when future positions are available.
____In other action at the Oct. 2 session, supervisors and residents heard solicitor Seth Springer explain the possible negotiating areas within the upcoming Comcast TV franchise agreement. The township might choose to negotiate an increase in the distance from a trunk line that services be extended, for example. Also discovered was that the township should be residents’ “first line of defense” for complaints about service or requests for services, a point that the township itself didn’t know.

____Wellsville Borough has gone the way of all local municipalities and approved York County’s hazard mitigation plan as its own at the Oct. 7 meeting. Municipalities are required to have a plan that describes how they will deal with everything from winter storms to nuclear accidents, but the project is too lengthy and too time-consuming for most to write on their own.
____The county’s plan was in excess of 350 pages and is required to be updated every five years. Signing on to the county plan also keeps local municipalities eligible for certain grant money that may come after a disaster.
____The town’s fall parade will be Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. A street sweeper will be hired to sweep Main and York streets. from one end of the borough to the other on Oct. 16 to prepare for the parade. Parking restrictions will be enforced from 9 a.m. to noon on that day.

The Northern Girls Field Hockey team defeated Shippensburg 4 to 0 on Wednesday, Oct. 2. In photo, Shannon Stutenroth and goalie Haley Mowery stop Shippensburg from scoring in the second half.
____In a game befitting the de facto divisional championship, the Lady Bears clashed with the Lady Hawks for the second time this season to open the week. Northern got the better of Susquenita in the first match-up with a 4-2 victory. Coming in, the teams sat tied atop the Capital, each with 1 loss. After the visitors got on the board first, Brooke Sheibley knotted the game at 1 off an assist from Devon Hake with just over 7 minutes remaining in the first half. Neither team was able to solve the other’s defensive riddle during the rest of regulation. Fans of both teams paid for the whole seat, but, they only needed the edge during the next several minutes of pulse-pounding 7v7 full-field action. Perhaps the Bears should dispense with the formalities of the first 60 minutes and go straight to the excitement of overtime? It was deja vu all over again as Annalise Armstrong (again) ran down the opposing forward on a breakaway to shift momentum back to the home squad. Meghan Gallagher (again) notched the game winner this time at 7:25 of the extra frame.
____In an inter-divisional game, on a field rougher than a goat’s knees, Haley Mowery posted another shutout as the Bears were triumphant over Shippensburg 4-0. Goals went to Steph Strock, Hake, Sheibley and Erin Martz while Meghan Gallagher had 2 helpers and Keighly Adams recorded 1.

The Northern Football team takes the field on Friday night in Gettysburg.
____Northern hosts Waynesboro this Friday night in a key Homecoming game. After last week's 42-20 loss to Gettysburg, the Polar Bears fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division. A league win against Waynesboro would put Northern back at .500 with three league games remaining. A solid effort would also greatly help in the confidence department with two back-to-back road games (Shippensburg on Oct. 19 and James Buchanan on Oct. 26).
____In Gettysburg on a warm evening, Oct. 4, Northern looked sharp early as senior quarterback Luke Lynes connected with senior all-purpose back Richard Settle on a 25-yard pass play at 8:17. Aiden Alves added the extra point. Northern's defense held the Warriors for the second straight time and then moved toward the host's end zone on a nine-play drive. However, the Gettysburg defense held strong and forced the Bears to punt. Early in the second quarter, Settle bulled and twisted his way into the end zone for Northern's second score. Alve's extra point try hit the right post but the Polar Bears held a 13-0 lead.
