On Tuesday at 3:00 a.m. a section of the ceiling collapsed, landing on the counter and bar stools. No one was sitting at the bar at the time. Attached to the beams were drop ceiling tiles.

____
Part of the ceiling in Baker's Restaurant on Route 15 came tumbling down early Tuesday morning, September 3, at 3:00 a.m. closing down the familiar landmark for the day. Only two people were near the immediate area, one customer and one waitress. Both escaped without injury. There was enough warning for both to get out of the way.
____"I am very thankful it happened when it did and no one was hurt." Bill Hronis, a co-owner said. Hronis owns Baker's Restaurant along with his two brothers, Alex and Gus.
____"This accident was in the original building. It was in no way connected to the new addition recently added," Hronis said.
____"I called Bill Eichelberger at eciService in Dillsburg at 3:45 a.m. and within the hour he had his emergency crew here ready to work," said Hronis.

____
Certain things happen in history that people will always remember - Landing on the moon, the Kennedy assassination and the terrorist attack at Twin Towers on 9-11.
____Most of the time it is the tragedies we remember.
____April 20, 1999 is a day which will also be remembered. After this day the lives of every school-age child, teacher, parent, fireman, first responder and policeman were never the same. This date was the Columbine Massacre in Littleton, Colorado.
____Two teenagers, Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, changed the innocence of a child going to school. In less than 20 minutes, 15 people were killed, including Harris and Klebold, and 21 were wounded.
____When the police arrived it turned into a waiting game. Not knowing how many shooters may still be in the school, their advance turned to patience and caution. Because of the delay at least two people bled to death inside the school.

Sgt. David Smith and Patrolmen Michael Lohr and Ben Martin practice a tactical drill to search for shooters inside Northern High School.

Sam Geiser advances for more yardage during Northern’s 45-0 win over Palmyra last week.

____After a resounding 45-0 win over Palmyra last week, Northern travels to face the Middletown Blue Raiders (0-1) in another non-league game. With sophomore quarterback Justin Markle filling in for injured Luke Lynes, and a 125 yard rushing night from Sam Geiser, the Polar Bears cruised to one of their biggest opening game wins under the lights at Bostic Field.
____The host Bears wasted no time scoring at 11:44 when Robert Shelly connected with Colton Baxter on a 50-yard pitch-pass play. Aiden Alves knocked the extra point through the uprights for a 7-0 lead. With 2:16 left, Richard Settle found the end zone from three yards out. Alves hit the extra point--the second of six he made for the night.
____In the second quarter, Northern added 17 points as Geiser scored on a 14-yard run at 11:22. Markle took it to the end zone from two yards out at 4:53 and Alves made a 32-yard field goal with 8.4 second left in the half. Geiser added a five-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter while Terelle Hicks scored on a 38-yard touchdown run at 7:59 in the final quarter.
____Justin Markel ended the game 8-for-22 with 115 yards and one interception.

Hockey team opens season with big win

A Northern player takes control of the ball in a scrimmage against Dover on Tuesday, August 20.

____  In a reversal of fortune, Northern avenged last year’s opening shutout loss to Big Spring with a 6-0 whitewashing of their own.
____  A trio of Juniors opened the scoring with Meghan Gallagher notching the Bear’s first of the year. The Mid-Fielder found the back of the cage on a corner assisted by Mid-Fielder Keighly Adams and Forward Arlana Racer. Another Junior, Center-Forward Devon Hake, made it 2-0 on Racer’s second assist.
____  The Lady Bears earned a corner with a precious few seconds left in the first half. With the defense crowding the circle to keep it in, Sophomore Center-Back Annalise Armstrong made sure they did not squander the opportunity. She intercepted a clearing attempt by the Bulldogs after time expired and deftly flicked it to 2012 First Team Mid-Penn Capital Division All-Star Brooke Sheibley on her right. The Senior Mid-Fielder wasted no time driving it past the goalie for her first goal of the season.
____  After switching ends of the field, the second half was a mirror image of the first. Sheibely scored her second goal of the game off Hake’s assist. Devon then made it a 3 point afternoon when she scored unassisted. Senior Forward Bailey Bleichner completed the scoring on Keighly’s second assist accounting for the 6-0 final.
